Favre will announce choice

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Brett Favre has scheduled a news conference for this morning, and a family spokeswoman said he’s expected to announce whether he’ll return to play for the Green Bay Packers this season.

Becky Stuart, a personal assistant to the Favre family, said the news conference would be held at 5:30 a.m. PDT at Favre’s charity golf tournament at the Cottonwoods Golf Course at Grand Casino Resort in Tunica, Miss.

“You’ve got to get up early if you want the scoop,” Stuart said.

Asked whether she knew which way Favre was leaning on whether to play or retire, Stuart said, “We’ve all got to find out at the same time.”

In a story in Friday’s Green Bay Press-Gazette, Favre said he told general manager Ted Thompson and head coach Mike McCarthy earlier this week he may have a decision by the weekend or early next week.

“I want to do what’s best, obviously, for me and my family,” he said. “But regardless of what people might think, I don’t want to jeopardize the future of the team. I don’t want to do that. I think that the people that know me, including those in the organization, know that.”

Favre, 36, who spoke with the Press-Gazette reporter at his golf tournament, said he wouldn’t want to play for anyone but Green Bay, which finished 4-12 in 2005, Favre’s only losing season in Green Bay.

Former Steeler Clack dies

Jim Clack, a guard on two Super Bowl-winning Pittsburgh Steelers teams in the 1970s, died of heart failure. He was 58.

Clack had fought neck and throat cancer for about four years before his death at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro (N.C.), his wife Susan Clack said.

Clack, who helped the Steelers win Super Bowls following the 1974 and 1975 seasons, played in 146 NFL games between 1971 and 1981. He played for Pittsburgh for seven seasons before joining the New York Giants in 1978 and playing for four more years.

Williams’ deal extended

Guard Bobbie Williams got a three-year contract extension from the Cincinnati Bengals, the first step in securing the core of an offensive line that is under contract only through this year.

The Bengals reworked the 2006 year on Williams’ contract and extended it through 2009.

Rabach out three weeks

Redskins center Casey Rabach will spend at least three weeks recovering from a deep cut in his leg following an accident on an all-terrain vehicle.

Rabach is wearing a cast and has been walking on crutches since the accident.
