Name that plant
The Northeastern Chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society will teach a wild plant identification course starting with a mostly indoor session on April 22 at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge. A May 20 field session at the refuge will follow. The course accommodates wild plant neophytes as well those with more knowledge.
Cost: $10 donation for one day or $15 for both.

Forest Service photog featured
“Splendid Was the Trail: Photographs of the National Forests by K.D. Swan” is a stunning black-and-white visual experience on display through April 28 at the new Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Visitor Center just off the I-90 Reserve Street exit in Missoula.
Swan, an honorary member of the Spokane Mountaineers, captured backcountry scenes in Idaho, Montana, Washington and the Dakotas as a Forest Service photographer from 1911 to 1947.
The traveling exhibit is just one of many reasons to see the new elk center and museum.
Admission: Free. Hours: 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, closed Sunday.

What: “Higher Education in Higher Places,” free multimedia program on 21-day collegiate trip to climb icy 18,000-foot peaks the Cordillera Blanca Mountain Range in Peru.
