McArthur won’t seek re-election to board

The Spokesman-Review

Alison McArthur said Tuesday she won’t run for re-election to the Post Falls school board.

McArthur, who has served on the board since 2003, said she is buying a home outside of her district and wants to spend more time with her family. It was a hard decision, McArthur added, because she has enjoyed her time on the board.

Bruce Howard, a former Post Falls school board member, filed to become a candidate for McArthur’s seat on Monday.

No one else has picked up a nomination packet, said Janie Anderson, the district clerk.

The deadline to file is 4:30 p.m. Friday. Candidates must be registered voters who live in Zone 1 – west of McGuire Road and south of the Spokane River – and must obtain signatures from at least five registered voters living in that area.

Health center offers discount blood tests

The Dirne Community Health Center in Coeur d’Alene will join with other regional health agencies to provide discounted blood testing during April.

Testing will be available from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. through April 26 at the center, 916 Ironwood Drive, Suite D. Results will be available at the clinic’s second annual Health Fair that will precede events for the nationwide Cover the Uninsured Week. The fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the student union building at North Idaho College.

Six common blood tests will be available. A full panel costs $35 and includes CMP, Lipid and CBC. Individual tests and prices include CMP, a chemistry profile for kidney and liver function, $16; Lipid cholesterol screening, $12; CBC blood cell count, $7; PSA prostate function test, $10; TSH thyroid function test, $9; HgA1c, hemoglobin test for diabetes, $10.50.

The reduced-price tests are offered by the Dirne clinic in conjunction with the Pathology Associates Medical Laboratories, the local office of Aging and Adult Services, and Advanced Benefit/Mediflex Administrators.

Adult and Aging services officials have provided a grant to further reduce costs for clients 65 and older. Advanced Benefit will cover the cost of the blood draws.

Horse racing set at Les Bois Park

Capitol Racing will hold horse racing at Les Bois Park this summer and will simulcast the races for viewers outside the area.

The Sacramento, Calif., company will hold 46 races starting May 5, said general manager Alan Horowitz. Racing will be held Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays through Aug. 12.

The only horse races at the track last year were part of the Western Idaho Fair. Last year’s race season was canceled after county commissioners evicted the former track operator, Lariat Productions.

The biggest change will be the simulcasting offered to other tracks and betting parlors.

“It enables us to raise purses, which benefits the horsemen,” Horowitz said. “The state also gets licensing fees. It also creates more value on winning bets that are likely to pay out more.”
