Pedestrian path planned near school
Post Falls is planning a new bicycle and walking path along 15th Avenue near Post Falls Middle School.
The city is starting the design process, and construction is set for 2007.
The project will include a sidewalk along the north side of 15th Avenue and bicycle lanes in each direction between Spokane and Idaho streets. The city also will add enhanced school zones, which include solar-powered safety beacons to warn drivers about school-zone speeds. For more information, call (208) 773-3511.

Nurses Walk to raise funds for scholarships
Participants in the fourth annual Nurses Walk can enjoy a five-mile stroll and raise money for local scholarships during the event planned for May 20 in Coeur d’Alene.
About 50 walkers joined in last year, raising about $1,400 to help pay education expenses for nursing students at Lewis-Clark State College and North Idaho College, organizer Maxine Martin said.
Participants meet at the Coeur d’Alene City Park Gazebo for the event, which is planned for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Walkers can start at any time during the day. There is a designated route to follow, and maps should be available.
Cost is $20 for the public, $10 for nursing students. The price includes the cost of a T-shirt. To register, send name, address, phone number, check and shirt size up to XXXL to: Pat Ellefsen, RN; NIBH, c/o Kootenai Medical Center, 2003 Lincoln Way, Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814.

Man flees detective; search under way
An investigation into a minor Idaho state theft turned into a manhunt after a man fled when a Kootenai County sheriff’s detective tried to interview him.
Stephen K. Nichols, 31, of Spirit Lake, was being questioned at a job site on North Idaho Road in Washington about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday when the detective determined that he was not being truthful, said Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Dave Reagan.
The detective attempted to handcuff Nichols, but he broke free and ran, Reagan said. Spokane County sheriff’s deputies and a U.S. Border Patrol helicopter searched for Nichols for nearly two hours. He is still at large.
A national crime computer search revealed that Nichols was wanted for a parole violation out of Texas, Reagan said. Nichols apparently served a prison sentence for attempted murder then violated parole following his release, he said.
Nichols shows no criminal history in Spokane County, and Kootenai County sheriff’s Capt. Ben Wolfinger said the suspect has no history of misbehavior in Idaho that would indicate he is a danger to the community.
