Undefeated Shock hope to keep it going at winless Amarillo
The Spokane Shock haven’t lost. The Amarillo Dusters haven’t won.
But Spokane coach Chris Siegfried has a number of valid concerns as the Shock (3-0) attempt to keep the Dusters (0-2) winless tonight at 5 at the Amarillo (Texas) Civic Center.
“In their first game they struggled against Arkansas,” Siegfried said. “They played Oklahoma City to a close game last week. It was back and forth until 8 minutes left before Oklahoma City pulled away.
“That tells me they’re a much improved team.”
Several Shock players are battling injuries, but Siegfried wouldn’t discuss specifics, aside from receiver/linebacker Nian Taylor (knee), who didn’t make the trip.
“There’s a good possibility we’ll dress an extra defensive back,” Siegfried said. “We had a lot of injuries from the last game. It’d be a lot better if our bye was this week, but we’re going to limp into this game. We’ve got four or five significant injuries, guys that have to play.”
Shock quarterback Alex Neist will try to build on last week’s 351-yard, five-touchdown performance against a Dusters defense that has allowed 16 touchdown passes in two games. Amarillo doesn’t have a sack this season and has allowed opponents 24.2 yards per kick return.
The Dusters were pummeled 58-20 by Arkansas in their opener, then fell at home to Oklahoma City 61-44. They rank last in the af2 in scoring offense and defense. Quarterback Steve Panella is completing just 45.8 percent of his passes and has an 80.8 rating.
Spokane, which has pulled out three narrow wins, has a bye next week.
Notes
Siegfried has 43 career af2 wins, most among active coaches. Stockton’s Richard Davis has 41. Ex-Rio Grande Valley and Tennessee Valley coach Kevin Guy (52) is tops on the all-time list. … Shock lineman Jerome Stevens has been fined $100 by the league for his role in an altercation and subsequent ejection late in the first half last Saturday.
