Gianukakis, Sattin will join CCS men

The Spokesman-Review

Community Colleges of Spokane has picked up some firepower for its men’s basketball team next season.

Much-honored Zach Gianukakis of Republic and Dylan Sattin of East Valley, who tied for third in Greater Spokane League scoring this past season, have committed to play for the Sasquatch, CCS announced.

Gianukakis, who led Republic to three straight State B tournament appearances, was All-Panorama League four straight years, the Associated Press State B Player of the Year in 2005 and 2006, and the most valuable player in the State B tournament in 2004 and 2006.

The Tigers captured the state title in 2004 and were runners-up in 2006, with a fifth-place finish in 2005.

In his career, Gianukakis averaged 18.9 points per game, accumulating 2,210 points, 11th all-time in scoring in the state. During his senior season, he averaged 24 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals per game.

Sattin averaged 17.9 points a game as a senior, which tied for third best in the GSL, after finishing eighth in scoring as a junior with a 13.8 average. He hit 61 3-pointers his senior season.

Baseball

Dave Johnson is retiring after 36 years as baseball coach at Ephrata High School, so the community is throwing him a party.

The Tigers will play host to Cascade at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the final home game of Johnson’s hall-of-fame tenure, and the school has invited back members of all his teams and anyone interested in celebrating his career.

Johnson, who grew up in Spokane and attended Whitworth College, went into the 2006 season with a 663-206 record. His Ephrata teams have won eight state titles, have been second five times, and third once and he has been named state coach of the year four times. This year’s squad had an 8-3 record through Monday. Info: (509) 754-3500.

Swimming

The names of four members of the Spokane Area Swim Team who swam on 10th-place relay teams at the YMCA National Championships the first weekend of this month in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., were inadvertently left out of a story on the team’s success in last Sunday’s Locally column.

Brittney Moore from Mead swam on both the women’s 400 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams.

Maggie Thompson (Sacajawea) also was on the 400 free team, and Lauren Malthanner (Northwest Christian) and Victoria Eickerman (West Valley) on the 400 medley quartet.

•The University of Idaho has added four new recruits to its women’s team, coach Tom Jager announced.

Slated to join the Vandals this fall are Amanda Watson, an all-around swimmer from Cody, Wyo., who earned all-conference and all-state recognition; Meghan Lord, Linden, Calif., a three-time All-American breaststroker; Katherine Kubancik, Boulder, Colo., an All-American all-stroke sprinter; and Nicole Shuh, Canby, Ore., the school record-holder in the 100 breaststroke.

Volleyball

Central Washington, an NCAA Division II school, has signed Mead’s Erin Norris, an All-Greater Spokane League second-team selection, to a national letter of intent.

She becomes the fifth player from the multiple state champions to sign with a Great Northwest Athletic Conference university and will join former Panthers teammate Rachel Schurman, a sophomore-to-be, as a Wildcat.
