OUTCLIMB

Rainier ranger peaks with experience

What: “Mountain Adventures: Climbing, Rescue and Being Struck by Lightning,” free slide program based on climbing experiences from Mount Rainier, Mount Foraker and the Grand Teton.

Who: Presented by Mike Gauthier, head climbing ranger, Mount Rainier National Park.

Where: Mountain Gear, 2002 N. Division.

Background: Since joining the Mount Rainier climbing staff in 1990, Gauthier has become director of the parks mountaineering and rescue program. His calling is no ordinary desk job, considering he’s been struck by lightning three times, caught in avalanches and burdened with the responsibility of managing complex rescues on Washington’s highest peak.

Gauthier has led six expeditions to Mount McKinley and the Alaska Range. His photography has appeared in Outside, Men’s Journal, Backpacker, and Rock and Ice magazines. In 2004, Men’s Journal listed him as one of the 25 Toughest Men in America, and in 1998, the American Red Cross named him a Wilderness Rescue Hero.
