Indiana hires G-Prep’s Brophy to coach golf

Gonzaga Prep 2002 graduate and former Notre Dame standout golfer Katie Brophy has been named assistant coach of the women’s golf program at Indiana University.

Brophy, who was a four-year letterwinner with the Fighting Irish, had an outstanding playing career at the university. As a two-time team captain, she recorded a school-record three tournament victories, earning medalist honors at the 2002 Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational, the 2003 Big East Championship and at the 2005 Jeannine McHaney Invitational/Central Region Preview.

In addition, she had a 77.46 scoring average in 131 rounds during her four-year career, good for the second-best average in Notre Dame history. Brophy was named team MVP in 2003 and 2005, and earned a spot on the All-Big East team in 2003 and 2004.

Brophy also shined in the classroom. She was a three-time member on the National Golf Coaches Association’s All-Scholar team, a two-time dean’s list member at Notre Dame and was honored as a Big East Academic All-Star following the 2004-05 season. She graduated from Notre Dame in May with a degree in sociology.

This is Brophy’s first coaching position.

Basketball

Jeff Peterson, an administrative assistant in the Gonzaga men’s program the past three years, has been named an assistant coach at Whitman College.

Peterson, 29, who was hired by Whitman head coach and former GU player Skip Molitor, expects to complete his master’s degree in organizational leadership later this year at Gonzaga.

Prior to joining Gonzaga’s program in 2003, Peterson was an assistant women’s coach for one season at the College of Lake County. He has also served as a personal trainer for NCAA Division I athletes in a variety of sports, including tennis, baseball, lacrosse and football.

College scene

Former East Valley graduate and current North Idaho College pitcher/first baseman Spring Montgomery recently earned second-team all-region honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

Last season, Montgomery was 23rd in the nation with 59 RBIs and finished 28th in the nation with 11 home runs.

She helped NIC win the Region 18 softball championship in May, earning the team its first berth to the NJCAA national tournament.

•University of Idaho sophomore volleyball player Haley Larsen has been named to the 2006 preseason All-WAC team. Larsen, who was the only Vandal on this year’s preseason team, was named second-team all-WAC and was an all-freshman team selection last season.

Hockey

Spokane Chiefs forward Mitch Wahl, 16, of Seal Beach, Calif., has been selected as a member of the U.S. team that will compete in the Three Nations’ Cup tournament in Rochester, N.Y., Saturday through Aug. 18.

Chiefs forward Evan Witt of Spokane, 16, just returned from the USA Hockey National Festival, playing in the U-17 division. He scored four points in five games.

Track and Field

George Mathews of Hayden Lake, Idaho, won the men’s 60-64 hammer throw at the USATF Masters Track and Field Outdoor Championships held at the University of North Carolina–Charlotte. His winning throw was 167 feet 6 inches. He was fifth in the shot put at 41-83/4.

Miscellany

Meredith Levy, a Ferris graduate attending Colorado State University, finished first in the 13-19 age division at the San Francisco Marathon last Sunday. Levy finished in 3 hours, 25 minutes and 10 seconds.
