Meet your neighbor

Carl Gidlund Correspondent

Name: William “Dusty” Rhoads

Age: 66

Hometown: I was raised in Gillette, Wyo., but traveled all over the world with the Air Force. I moved here in 1988 after retiring from the Air Force.

Occupation: Retired from the Air Force after 28 years, worked here as a Kootenai County sheriff’s deputy, but now I’d have to call myself a veterans’ advocate. I’m a life member of the American Legion, Marine Corps League, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Vietnam Veterans of America and the Retired Enlisted Association.

Family: My wife, Audrey, lives here with me, and I have two daughters in Wyoming. She also has children in Scotland, Warwickshire and London in England, and Houston.

Hobbies: In addition to veterans’ activities, I’m a “gun nut.”

What do you like about North Idaho? Everything, really, the mountains, trees, four seasons and moderate climate.

What do you like or dislike about the current season? It’s really been awfully hot lately, and if it gets above 85 degrees, I’m done.

Favorite music: Country, especially old-timers like Jimmy Wakely and Chet Atkins. But I also like some easy listening, like Bachrach.

Favorite TV show: I enjoy the History Channel and its documentaries, especially programs on World Wars I and II, but I don’t watch programs on Vietnam. Those bring some bad dreams.

Favorite movie: “Shane.” As a little kid, I was an extra in the movie when it was filmed in Wyoming.

Favorite spot in North Idaho? Why? I believe it’s going to be Farragut State Park as soon as we get a veterans’ cemetery established there.
