Clark Fork areas to be closed

The Spokesman-Review

Stretches of the Clark Fork and Blackfoot rivers will be closed to fishing and other recreation for five years as part of the project to remove Milltown Dam.

The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission authorized the closures effective Sept. 1. They will end on June 1, 2011.

The Clark Fork will be closed from about one-half mile below Milltown Dam to three miles upstream. On the Blackfoot, the closure will cover a stretch of about 1.5 miles, from the river’s confluence with the Clark Fork.

Milltown Dam, near the confluence, will be removed in a $100 million project overseen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The project includes removal of toxic sediment that has accumulated behind the dam.

Work on bridges upstream from the dam may start as early as September.

Milltown Reservoir’s drawdown began in June. With the water gone, workers can remove mud — by the trainload — contaminated by mine and smelter waste that washed downstream from the Butte area during a 100-year span. Removal of the dam will follow work to remove the mud.
