Danielle Orsillo scored 19 points and Lewis and Clark grad Briann January added 16 points and seven rebounds to help No. 14 Arizona State beat Boston University 75-53 Friday night in the first round of the ASU Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
It was the first game for the Sun Devils (6-1) since starting forward Aubree Johnson’s 15-year-old brother died in his sleep while in the U.S. Virgin Islands to see his sister play in a tournament. Arizona State and Rutgers canceled the championship game of the Paradise Jam after the death, which was blamed on an enlarged heart.
Johnson (Post Falls) and starter Emily Westerberg (Central Valley) missed the game. They are both in Idaho for Jordan Johnson’s funeral today.
Arizona State advanced to the championship game against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks, who defeated Eastern Michigan 89-69.
Jesyka Burks-Wiley led Boston University (3-3) with 11 points. The Sun Devils held Terriers leading scorer Katie Meinhardt to six points – nine less than her average.
January scored eight points in Arizona State’s 12-0 start, and had 12 points and four rebounds as the Sun Devils built a 30-20 halftime lead. Regan Pariseau (Central Valley) added nine points for the game.
Boston University closed to 54-42 with 8:19 to play, but Arizona State scored seven straight points and the Terriers never got closer than 16 the rest of the way.
Rice 79, (10) Texas A&M 66: At Houston, Lauren Neaves had 20 points and 20 rebounds and Valeriy Berezhynska scored 21 points to help the Owls upset the Aggies.
The Owls (5-2) shot a season-best 58.5 percent from the field en route to their first victory over a Top 10 team since they beat then-No. 6 Louisiana Tech in February 2002.
A’Quonesia Franklin had 16 points for the Aggies (6-1), who climbed into the Top 10 for the first time in school history this week.
Fresno State 74, (25) Texas Tech 65: At Fresno, Calif., Tierre Wilson scored 20 points and Chantella Perera had 17 points and six assists in the Bulldogs’ upset of the Red Raiders.
Wilson hit three 3-pointers and Jenny Thigpin added 10 points for the Bulldogs (4-2), who improved to 3-0 at home and snapped a two-game losing streak.
Fresno State hung on with a second-half rally against the Red Raiders (6-2), who stumbled after making their first appearance in the poll Monday following three consecutive wins.
Men
(8) Marquette 83, Northwestern State 67: At Milwaukee, Ousmane Barro had a career-high 21 points and tied a personal best with 13 rebounds to help the Golden Eagles beat the Demons in the Blue & Gold Classic.
Dominic James scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half and Wes Matthews finished with 14 points for Marquette (8-0), which will play North Dakota State in the championship game of the four-team tournament today.
Barro also blocked three shots.
