Ams continue to have Chiefs’ number

KENNEWICK – Colton Yellow Horn scored a pair of power-play goals in the second period and the Tri-City Americans held off the Spokane Chiefs 4-3 in Western Hockey League play on Saturday at the Toyota Center.

Tri-City (17-10, 34 points) beat Spokane (13-11-3-1, 30 points) for the fourth time in five tries this season. The Americans are 3-0 against the Chiefs at home.

The loss dropped Spokane into fourth place in the U.S. Division – one point behind Seattle.

Spokane jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by David Rutherford – his 15th of the season – at the 7:58 mark of the first period. Dan Mercer and Judd Blackwater assisted on the score.

The Americans followed with four straight goals – three in the first period – and never relinquished the lead.

Blackwater scored power-play goals at 11:57 and 14:26 to give the Ams the lead and Kruise Reddick notched his third goal of the season to stretch the lead to 3-1 with 1:30 left in the period. Blackwater has 17 goals this season.

Joel Broda scored the Ams’ third power-play goal just 5:05 into the second period.

Spokane made a run with a pair of third-period scores.

Ondrej Roman scored his third goal of the season – a power-play netter – to pull the Chiefs within 4-2 at 12:55. Mitch Wahl capped the scoring with a goal – his seventh on the year – at 15:10.

The Chiefs begin a four-game homestand on Tuesday night.
