Ducks beat Kings, continue best start
Teemu Selanne had two goals and an assist, Rob Niedermayer scored in his 800th NHL game, and the Anaheim Ducks held off a late rally to beat the Los Angeles Kings 4-3 on Saturday in Los Angeles for their fifth straight victory.
Anaheim (20-2-6) is off to the best start in franchise history, leading the NHL with 46 points.
Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 38 saves – five during a two-man advantage the Kings had for a full two minutes in the second period.
Scott Thornton triggered a three-goal third period for the Kings that included power-play tallies in the final two minutes by Rob Blake and Dustin Brown – both coming after delay-of-game penalties to Todd Marchant and Scott Niedermayer.
Sharks 3, Red Wings 2: At Detroit, Joe Pavelski’s goal with 5.9 seconds remaining capped San Jose’s comeback and gave the Sharks a win over the Red Wings.
San Jose, which won its fifth straight, also got goals from Patrick Marleau and Mark Bell.
Senators 5, Lightning 2: At Ottawa, Antoine Vermette scored twice and Jason Spezza added a goal and an assist to help the Senators defeat Tampa Bay.
Eric Perrin and Vincent Lecavalier scored in the second period for the Lightning.
Maple Leafs 4, Canadiens 3 (SO) : At Montreal, Sheldon Souray scored the shootout winner after Montreal teammate Saku Koivu netted two goals in the third period, lifting the Canadiens to a victory over Toronto.
Thrashers 3, Panthers 1: At Sunrise, Fla., Glen Metropolit scored the tiebreaking goal in the second period and Kari Lehtonen had 27 saves to help Atlanta to a win over Florida.
Jean-Pierre Vigier and Ilya Kovalchuk also scored for Atlanta.
Olli Jokinen scored for Florida.
Islanders 5, Penguins 3: At Pittsburgh, Viktor Kozlov and Mike Sillinger each had two goals to lead New York to a win over the Penguins.
New York’s Miroslav Satan scored his 300th career goal.
Devils 4, Flyers 3 (SO): At Philadelphia, Zach Parise and Brian Gionta scored on backhanded shots during a shoot-out to give New Jersey a win over the Flyers.
Martin Brodeur blanked Philadelphia’s Simon Gagne and Petr Nedved in the tiebreaker.
Blackhawks 4, Predators 3: At Nashville, Tenn., Jeffrey Hamilton scored a career-high three goals, including the winner in overtime, as Chicago beat the Predators.
The Blackhawks are 3-0 under new coach Denis Savard, who replaced the fired Trent Yawney on Monday.
Chicago is also 3-0 against Nashville this season.
Hurricanes 5, Bruins 2: At Raleigh, N.C., Eric Staal had two goals, and Justin Williams added a short-handed tally following a nifty pass by Rod Brind’Amour to help Carolina beat Boston.
Ex-Spokane Chief Ray Whitney also scored for Carolina.
Capitals 7, Sabres 4: At Washington, Richard Zednik and Bryan Muir scored 34 seconds apart during a four-goal first period and the Capitals beat Buffalo.
Washington’s Alex Ovechkin scored his team-high 17th goal.
Stars 4, Wild 3 (SO): At Dallas, Sergei Zubov, Jussi Jokinen and Mike Ribeiro scored in a shootout as the Stars snapped a three-game losing streak by beating Minnesota.
Zubov and Jokinen scored on their shootout attempts before Minnesota’s Brian Ralston answered.
Blue Jackets 4, Oilers 0: At Edmonton, Alberta, Fredrik Norrena made 21 saves in his first NHL shutout, lifting Columbus to a win over the Oilers.
Dan Fritsche had a goal and two assists for Columbus.
Oilers captain Ryan Smyth broke a thumb in Edmonton’s 4-0 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets and is out indefinitely.
Canucks 2, Avalanche 1: At Vancouver, British Columbia, Taylor Pyatt scored the go-ahead goal on a power play in the third period and Roberto Luongo made 40 saves, lifting the Canucks over Colorado.
