Top lineman selects Eastern

The Spokesman-Review

Chris Powers, a highly decorated lineman out of Tahoma, made an oral commitment to the Eastern Washington football team during the weekend.

A 6-foot-4, 265-pound defensive end, Powers was the South Puget Sound North defensive lineman of the year and a first-team pick on offense as a left guard.

His father, Greg, said a year ago his son’s five choices for schools were Washington State, Eastern, Washington, Montana and Idaho.

Powers, who did not take any of his recruiting visits, lives in Black Diamond, just north of Maple Valley, which played a role in his decision to go to Cheney.

Chris Powers told Rivals.com, “I’m not a real big-city guy. When they came to my school they seemed the most honest, didn’t really talk any bull and just told me straight up how their program was. They didn’t try and sugarcoat anything. My whole family liked the coaches and how they were, too.”

Powers also said, “I’m an aggressive lineman, have a good work ethic and my motor doesn’t ever quit.”

It gives Eastern five early commitments.

The official national letter of intent period is in February.

Men’s basketball

Washington State sophomore Daven Harmeling, who averaged 15.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in two wins last week, has been named the Pac-10 Player of the Week.

He had a career-high 20 points, hitting 4 of 9 from 3-point range, in WSU’s 77-67 upset of then-18th-ranked Gonzaga.
