Girls basketball

Nikki Nelson scored 15 points Friday, guiding Chewelah to a 42-41 non-league win over host Bonners Ferry.

The Badgers (6-4) were led by the 12 points of Becky Lowther, who had a chance to win the game but missed a last-second desperation shot at the buzzer.

Jenny Polm added 13 points for the Cougars (7-0).

In other non-league action, Kyla Evans scored 20 points and Martha Taylor added 13 as Brewster topped host Freeman 59-48. Jennesa Miller scored 13 points and Kelsey Raines chipped in 10 for Freeman (6-2). … Ellen Miller scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as St. John-Endicott came from behind to beat visiting Dayton 50-41 at St. John. Alyssa FitzGerald added eight points and five steals for the Eagles (3-3). Natalie Barker scored 12 points and collected eight rebounds to lead Dayton. … Amanda Krieg scored 17 points and Chelsea Rainbolt added 16 as Springdale beat host Kettle Falls 75-64. The Chargers (5-3) outscored the Bulldogs 21-13 in the second quarter to take a 38-29 lead into halftime. Chelsea Brisbois scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Kettle Falls (2-4).

Saundra Curley scored 15 points and dished out four assists, guiding Lakeside (Idaho) to a 44-38 win over Cusick in the championship game of the Lakeside Christmas tournament in Plummer. Ruth Brunelle added eight rebounds for the victorious Knights (6-5). Amanda Smith scored 13 point to lead Cusick (5-5).

“Northwest Christian overcame Wellpinit’s Samantha Flett’s 41-point effort and beat the Redskins (3-4) 70-59 in overtime in the title game of the Keith Dyk Northwest Christian tournament. Kyla Schmidt scored 10 of her 14 points in the overtime period for the Crusaders (5-4).

Roni Jo Mielke scored 14 points and Jamie Larmer added 13 as Sprague-Harrington topped Colton 54-44 in the championship game of the Troy Christmas tournament. Maria Rustemeyer added 10 points for the Falcons (7-0), who outscored the Wildcats 16-9 in the third quarter to take a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter. Rochelle Druffel scored 17 points to lead Colton (7-1).

Boys basketball

A.J. Bennett scored 15 points and Casey Langford hit two key free throws late in the game to give Bonners Ferry (7-2) a 59-56 win over visiting Chewelah. Mike Naccarato scored 14 points to lead the Cougars (4-3). … Weston Sellars scored 14 points and Ryan Douse added 12 points and seven rebounds as Kettle Falls cruised past visiting Springdale 70-49. Andrew Hite and Brian Strobel added 12 points each for the Bulldogs (2-4), who outscored the Chargers (1-7) 25-12 in the decisive third quarter. … Justin Taylor scored 19 points, leading St. John-Endicott to a 58-30 win over Dayton at St. John. The Eagles (3-2) outscored the Bulldogs 30-18 in the second half.

“Spencer Pingel scored a season-high 26 points, but it wasn’t enough as Baker City beat Post Falls 89-80 at the Baker City (Ore.) tournament. Cody Balardo tallied 14 points and Casey Ward added 13 for the Trojans (5-4).

Austin Folnagy scored a game-high 20 points and Josiah Menzies added 16 as Coeur d’Alene Charter (5-2) topped Lakeside (Idaho) 65-48 in the championship game of the Lakeside Christmas tournament in Plummer. Jeremiah Brunelle finished with 17 points and Samuel Torpey added 11 for the Knights (3-4).

Joe Grewe scored 19 points, leading Northwest Christian to a 63-57 win over Wellpinit in the championship game of the Keith Dyk Northwest Christian tournament. Chase Ramey added 13 points for the Crusaders (9-0). Chazz Flett tallied 15 points to lead the Redskins (4-3).

“Thomas Jacobs scored 17 points and Russel Sarchet added 13 as Colton (2-4) beat Sprague-Harrington 62-41 in the consolation game of the Troy tournament. Leigh Talkington scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Falcons (3-4).

Wrestling

Kyle Druffel’s pin of East Valley’s Jordan Berezay in the 189-pound weight class helped Pullman secure first place at the Tri-County wrestling tournament at Central Valley High School.

Other winners for the Greyhounds included Ruslan Cox (103), Ian Buck (125) and Matt David (140).

Trevor Delmedico’s (112) pin of Liberty’s Derek Knecht helped tournament host Central Valley finish in second place.

Ferris, University and Mead rounded out the top five.

“Deer Park topped Royal 40-22 and finished in third place out of 32 teams at the Best of the West dual meet tournament, held Wednesday and Thursday in Pasco.

Deer Park’s Drew Acorn (103), Levi Zadorozny (112), Justin Eldred (119), Sam Lane (130), Brandon Leliefeld (135), Viktor Nesenchuk (140), Cody Miller (145), Ethan Grable (171) and Nick Larson (215) all won their matches against Royal.

“Springdale took second place at the Moses Lake Hall of Fame girls wrestling tournament. Chewelah took sixth, Lake Roosevelt seventh and CV eighth.

Chewelah’s Rebekah Gilreath (130) and Jessica Johnstone (145) and Central Valley’s Emily Juhre (112) earned first place in their respective weight classes.
