USC shocks Shockers
Nick Young scored 26 points and Southern California beat No. 8 Wichita State 60-56 Saturday in the third-place game of the Las Vegas Classic, handing the Shockers their second loss in as many nights after they had opened the season 9-0.
Young, who went 11 for 14 from the field, made a jumper as the shot clock ran out with 1:03 to play, and Lodrick Stewart then stole the ball and made one free throw to put the Trojans (10-3) ahead 58-53.
But Sean Ogirri of Wichita State made a 3-pointer with 7 seconds to play to make it 58-56, and Daniel Hackett of the Trojans had to make two free throws with 6.4 seconds left to put the game away.
Hackett and Taj Gibson had 12 points apiece for the Trojans, who have won five of six. They lost Friday to Kansas State in the semifinals.
Ogirri led Wichita State (9-2) with 16 points.

Darren Collison added 15 points and eight assists and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute had 13 points and a career-high seven steals for the Bruins, who were in command from the opening tip.
Courtney Sims led Michigan with 13 points, but 11 came after the outcome was decided. Lester Abram added 11 points for Michigan, which lost by 37 despite shooting 46 percent (23 of 50).
Michigan is off to its best start in 14 years, but the Wolverines were playing just their third road game. They have beaten only two teams – Davidson and Harvard – with winning records.
(4) Wisconsin 83, Pacific 47: At Madison, Wis., Kammron Taylor scored 17 points to help the Badgers (12-1) beat the Tigers (3-9).
Four starters scored in double figures in the Badgers’ first game since beating then-No. 2 Pittsburgh one week ago.
That victory vaulted the Badgers to their highest national ranking.
Alando Tucker added 15 points for Wisconsin, while Brian Butch and Joe Krabbenhoft had 11 each.
Steffan Johnson had 16 points for Pacific, which has lost its last six games, a streak that includes three losses to ranked teams.
(7) Pittsburgh 84, Dayton 54: At Pittsburgh, Sam Young made up for star center Aaron Gray’s off night by scoring 18 points and the Panthers (11-2) opened up big leads well before halftime, bouncing back from consecutive losses to ranked teams by roughing up the Flyers (10-2).
Young and point guard Levance Fields teamed to lead the Panthers’ fast start as Pitt showed no fatigue from its 95-89, double-overtime defeat Thursday night to No. 15 Oklahoma State in Oklahoma City. That loss followed an 89-75 defeat to then-No. 7 Wisconsin when the Panthers were ranked No. 2.
(10) Alabama 99, Coppin State 49: At Tuscaloosa, Ala., Alonzo Gee was 12 for 14 from the field for a career-high 26 points and had nine rebounds to lead the Crimson Tide (11-1) to a victory over the Eagles (2-9).
The Crimson Tide used an 11-0 run to take a 16-8 lead in the game’s opening 8 minutes. Coppin State scored five straight points to get within three points, but Alabama broke the game open with a 33-12 run and led 55-30 at halftime.
Yamene Colemen had 10 rebounds and Demetrius Jemison followed with nine as Alabama finished with a 52-24 rebound advantage.
Tywain McKee led Coppin State with 12 points.
(11) Kansas 84, Boston College 66: At Lawrence, Kan., the Jayhawks (10-2) dismayed their fans and shocked the Eagles (7-3) by switching to an uncharacteristic 3-2 zone, triggering a 24-4 first-half run en route to a victory.
The Jayhawks, who almost always play man-to-man defense, held a 21-19 lead when the surge began. Soon after, Brandon Rush came off the bench despite two fouls and the defense made the switch and the Jayhawks got their running game in high, unstoppable gear.
(12) LSU 68, Louisiana Tech 52: At Baton Rouge, La., Glen Davis bounced back from a season-low eight points with 23 and Terry Martin added 19 to lead the Tigers (7-3) to a victory over the Bulldogs (2-9).
Davis, who struggled in the Tigers’ 88-72 loss Wednesday at No. 17 Washington, made a career-high 15 free throws and grabbed a season-high 14 rebounds.
Martin, playing in just his second game since becoming eligible, was 7 of 9 from the field, including 5 of 6 from 3-point range.

Jeremy Hunt added 16 points for Memphis, while Chris Douglas-Roberts went 5 for 6 from the field and had 13. Willie Kemp and Robert Dozier each had 11 points.
Demond Yates had 12 points for the Blue Raiders, who got little from their two leading scorers – Kevin Kanaskie and Tim Blue – who were a combined 1 of 15 from the field.
(21) Oregon 84, Mercer 64: At Eugene, Ore., Aaron Brooks scored 27 points and Bryce Taylor added 21 to lead the Ducks (11-0) to a victory over the Bears (5-6).
Maarty Leunen had 10 points and a career-high 18 rebounds, and Adam Zahn added career highs of 15 points and 11 rebounds for the short-handed Ducks, who are off to their best start in 60 years.
Oregon was 12-0 in 1946-47.
Freshman James Florence had 19 points for Mercer. He sparked a comeback effort before fouling out with 5 minutes remaining.
Playing without three starters because of injuries, Oregon went with a big lineup that produced its best rebounding effort of the season.
The Ducks had a 55-29 advantage on the boards.
(24) Air Force vs. Northern Colorado, ppd.: At Air Force Academy, Colo., Air Force’s 10-day break for final exams has been extended to 15 days because of the blizzard that dumped up to 3 feet of snow on Colorado this week.
The Falcons (11-1) were scheduled to play at Northern Colorado, but that game was postponed because of travel complications from the snowstorm that hit Colorado’s most populous region.
