Pair receive EWU scholarships

Two local students have recently received scholarships from Eastern Washington University for the 2005-06 school year.

Kelsie Williamson of Spokane was awarded a $2,000 Presidential Scholarship. Williamson, a 2005 graduate of East Valley High School, is the daughter of Beth and Roger Williamson of Spokane. She is majoring in education. The award is given to incoming freshman based on their academic achievement and is renewable for a second year if a 3.5 grade-point average is maintained.

Joshua Meckel of Spokane was awarded a $500 Engineering and Design Scholarship. Meckel, a 2001 graduate of Ferris High School, is majoring in mechanical engineering. He is the son of Cerena and Dan Meckel of Spokane.

Blake Walker of Spokane was named to the fall quarter dean’s list at Northwestern University. Students on the list must hold a grade-point average of 3.70 or better.

Here are additional students who made the recent University High School Honor Roll. Their names were inadvertantly omitted by the school district.

Junior: Robert Crump, 3.50 grade-point average and above.

Seniors: 4.0 and above: Jim Cox, David Crump Jr., Kimberly Kelly, Corey Koentopp and Tasha Weaver. 3.5 g.p.a. and above: Buddy Glenn, Yangzi Jin, Johan Pereira, Khristopher Weathers.

Gonzaga School of Law student Jill Quinn was named one of 10 All-American Attorneys at the recent UCLA Mock Trial Invitational Tournament in Los Angeles. Quinn, a senior, earned 19 out of a possible 20 points to earn the honor. More than 300 students participated in the tournament.

Gonzaga University Mock Trial Team 615 won the recent Pacific Northwest Mock Trial Invitational tournament held at Gonzaga with a perfect 6-0 record. GU Team 614 took second place and GU Team 616 took third place. Five other teams competed in the tournament.

GU Team 615 includes Kristen Benadom, Patrick Gunning, Michael Hickey, Claire Hood, Katie Love, Daisy Tran and Greg Wilson. GU Team 614 includes Cory Campbell, Gina Cervino, Dan McGivern, Jill Quinn, Kate Scordato, Matt Shoop and Forrest Smith. GU Team 616 includes Tim Campbell, Robert Coleman, Katie Gast, Brett Grannemann, Ginny Griffin, Emmilee Peterson and Sara Strachila.

Air Force Airman Nickolas Johnson recently completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. Johnson, a 2005 graduate of Cheney High School, is the son of Patti McKeown of Medical Lake.

Two area residents recently completed one station unit training at Fort Sill, Okla.

Army Pvt. Brendon Favre, a 2003 graduate of Ferris High School, is the son of Jim and Sharan Favre of Spokane.

Army Pvt. Mike Grenkavich, a 2005 graduate of University High School, is the son of Holly Hilby of Spokane and Mike Grenkavich of Seattle.

Idaho

Stephanie Rasmussen of Coeur d’Alene was recently named to the fall semester president’s list at Williston State College in North Dakota. Students on the list have earned a grade-point average of 3.80 or greater.

Nathan Bradbury of Rathdrum was recently selected as the National Institute for Advanced Transportation Technology Student of the Year for his excellence in research and academic performance. Bradbury is a graduate student studying mechanical engineering at the University of Idaho. He is working to produce a turbocharged and direct-injected two-stroke engine for use in snowmobiles.

Jordan Sand of Coeur d’Alene has been named to Whitworth College’s Laureate Society for the fall 2005 semester. Students are named to the society when they earn a grade-point average of 3.75 or greater.
