No. 14 UCLA holds off Arizona St.
Jordan Farmar scored 18 points and Arron Afflalo added 17 to help No. 14 UCLA hold off Arizona State 69-60 Thursday night in Los Angeles and remain alone atop the Pac-10 standings.
The Bruins didn’t take their first double-digit lead until Afflalo hit a jumper with 2 minutes, 39 seconds left.
The Sun Devils dropped their fourth in a row. Bryson Krueger led them with 14 points and Antwi Atuahene added 12. Their leading scorer, Kevin Kruger, was held to eight.
Last month, the Bruins escaped with a one-point victory in Tempe on two late baskets by Farmar. This time, he did his damage in the first half with 15 points.
UCLA center Michael Fey returned for the first time since playing a minute against Washington on Jan. 14. He had missed most of the previous 10 games because of groin, shoulder and ankle injuries.
USC 77, Arizona 70
Gabe Pruitt scored 16 of his 25 points in the second half and had seven steals, Nick Young added 21 points and nine rebounds, and the Trojans beat the mistake-prone Wildcats in Los Angeles to snap a five-game losing streak to Arizona.
Lodrick Stewart scored 17 points for the Trojans, who took advantage of 22 turnovers to win for the fourth time in five games.
Freshman Marcus Williams led Arizona with 17 points and nine rebounds.
Stanford 57, Oregon 56
Chris Hernandez sank a 3-pointer with 11.3 seconds left to lift the Cardinal to a come-from-behind victory over the Ducks in Eugene, Ore.
Hernandez scored Stanford’s final eight points, rescuing the Cardinal from a 54-49 deficit with 2:20 to play.
Hernandez finished with 20 points and Matt Haryasz had 24 points and 14 rebounds for Stanford, which has won four straight and seven of its last eight.
Malik Hairston scored 23 points to lead Oregon, which has lost its last four.
Cal 69, Oregon State 52
Richard Midgley had 16 points and Leon Powe added 16 rebounds as the Golden Bears cruised to a win over the Beavers in Corvallis, Ore.
Ayinde Ubaka had 14 points and seven assists for Cal.
Reserve Sasa Cuic had 21 points and a career-high 11 rebounds to lead Oregon State, but seniors Nick DeWitz and Chris Stephens were shut down for the second straight game.
DeWitz finished with two points, nine off his season average, and Stephens, the Beavers’ leading scorer at 14 per game, had five points.
