McGahey guides Titans
Kayla McGahey’s all-around championship performance led University to the District 8 4A gymnastics title at Central Valley on Friday night, beating Mead by just more than three points.
McGahey scored 36.80 all-around points, including a meet-high 9.5 on the uneven bars, to defeat Sara Hanson of Mt. Spokane by .55 points. Tonya Turner, Mead’s highest finisher, placed third at 35.85.
U-Hi finished with 168.85 points, followed by Mead at 165.825, CV at 160.80 and Shadle Park at 154.40. These four teams will advance to the Eastern Region tournament on Feb. 11 at CV.
Wrestling
Reigning state champion University sent all five of its No. 1 seeds and 11 wrestlers overall to the semifinals of the District 8 4A tournament at Mead.
The two-day tournament will conclude today, with semifinals starting at 10 a.m. The top four finishers advance to next weekend’s regional tournament in Walla Walla.
Medical Lake 119-pound senior Tony Fino upset top-seeded Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) sophomore Kyle Johnson 7-5 in the quarterfinals of the District 7 2A tournament at Deer Park.
The two-day tournament concludes today, with semifinal action starting at 10 a.m. The top four finishers will advance to next weekend’s regional tournament in Moses Lake.
Junior hockey
David Manzo scored two goals and Leif Sherman had three assists as Spokane and Beaver Valley (31-10-3-2) skated to a 3-3 tie in a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League game at Planet Ice.
Jason Greenwell had 35 saves, including five in overtime, for the Braves (19-20-5-3).
Brett Kellogg scored four goals and Alex Lelwica added three as Spokane routed last-place Butte (5-36) 12-2 in Northern Pacific Hockey League play at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
Zach Lelwica had 30 saves for the Flyers (21-19).
