Zags score 7 runs in 6th to defeat N. Colorado

The Gonzaga baseball team piled up seven runs in the sixth inning – six unearned – en route to a 12-5 rout of Northern Colorado in seven innings Sunday at the Texas-Pan American Classic in Edinburg, Texas.

Third baseman Darin Holcomb (Shadle Park High) and center fielder Jackson Brennan each went 2 for 3 for the Bulldogs (3-1), and Brennan scored four runs. Designated hitter Ryan Weigand was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two walks.

Senior Nate Williams earned his second win in relief, pitching 12/3 scoreless innings. Matt Collins (0-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up seven unearned runs on three hits in 12/3 innings.

Swimming

Pullman swimmers won five events as the Greyhounds won the 8-team District 5/7/8 2A/3A championships, which concluded Saturday in Ellensburg.

Ian Clark won the 200-yard individual medley and 500 freestyle for Pullman, and the 200 freestyle relay team of Nick Long-Rinehart, Michael McNamara, Cody Wilson and Clark set a meet record with a time of 1 minute, 32.07 seconds.

Cheney’s Ryan Nadeau finished second to Clark in the 200 IM and earned the Blackhawks’ lone berth to the state tournament in two weeks at King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way. Cheney finished third, one spot behind West Valley (Yakima) for the final team berth.
