Big Aussie finding his comfort zone
PULLMAN — When he first arrived at Washington State in the fall Aron Baynes immediately became one of his coaching staff’s favorite targets in practice. Relatively new to the game, the Cairns, Australia, native looked lost at times in the low post, relying on his 6-foot-10, 247-pound frame more than his basketball acumen. (Still, he had recruiting interest from Gonzaga, Utah and Saint Mary’s as well.)
But lately, Baynes has gone from shaky newcomer to solid force, posting double-doubles in each of WSU’s last two games. He’ll get a chance to extend that streak to three tonight when the Cougars host the Pac-10-leading Bruins of UCLA on Friel Court.
S-R: How has the adjustment to life in the United States been this year?
AB: It hasn’t been much of a change, in a way. It’s pretty similar to what life was like back in Australia. Australia is pretty much exactly the same, except for the accent.
S-R: And the basketball?
AB: It’s not as physical as I’m used to. That’s been the biggest change coming over to the States. … Lately I’ve been limiting my fouls and been able to stay out on the court more.
S-R: What’s clicked these last couple of games?
AB: I’ve been able to get more court time. That’s just allowed me to go out there and start playing, which made me happier. I wouldn’t say it’s getting easier, but I’m getting more comfortable in the role.
S-R: You’ve only been playing the game for a few years, so how much of a crash course has this season been?
AB: It’s only my fifth year, so I’m not that experienced. But the Pac-10, boy, preconference games were pretty intense but as soon as we started playing in the conference it stepped up to another level I’m not used to. I guess I’ve just been getting used to it each game.
S-R: It’s not quite like seeing another Aussie, but WSU has recruited a New Zealand native (Thomas Abercrombie) to join the team next year. Excited?
AB: It’ll be nice to have someone I can actually talk to about where I come from. I guess he’ll know some of the music that I like from down there.
