Weigand’s 9th-inning single gives Gonzaga win over No. 2 OSU
Freshman designated hitter Ryan Wiegand hit a one-out, two-run single to left-center field in the bottom of the ninth as Gonzaga won the Coca-Cola Baseball Classic in Surprise, Ariz., with a 6-5 victory over No. 2 Oregon State.
Jackson Brennan started the rally for the Bulldogs (6-1) after being hit by a pitch from Kevin Gunderson (0-1). Zach Woodward moved Brennan to third base with a single to right, then advanced to second on the throw to third.
Josh Monroe won his season debut, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts in three innings of relief. Woodward finished 3 for 5 at the plate with an RBI, while freshman Tyson Van Winkle hit 2 for 4.
Community Colleges of Spokane product Scott Santschi hit 3 for 5 with a double and a RBI for the Beavers (2-1).
Gonzaga earned its sixth straight victory and won its second straight preseason tournament.
Washington State 9, (10) Missouri 3
Jeff Miller’s three-run double capped a six-run fourth inning as the Cougars defeated the Tigers in the championship game of the Buccaneer Classic in Charleston, S.C.
Paul Gran and Garrett Kimbrel also hit RBI doubles in the inning for the Cougars (3-1), who benefitted from two hit batsmen, two walks and an error.
Gran and designated hitter Jared Prince each had two hits for WSU, and Prince pitched a perfect ninth to seal the win. Zane Taylor and Jacob Friday each hit 2 for 4 to lead the Tigers (2-2).
Mike Wagner earned the win in his season debut, allowing one run and scattering five hits while striking out five in six innings.
Stephen Holst (0-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing six earned runs in 31/3 innings.
Lewis-Clark State 11, Whitworth 3
Zach Adam hit a three-run homer in a five-run first inning, and the Warriors scored the first eight runs in a rout of the Pirates in Lewiston.
Lewiston High product Allen Balmer also went deep for LCSC (4-0), the No. 2 NAIA team in the nation, while D.J. Kooken had a pair of hits.
Designated hitter Mike Marlow went 2 for 4 for the Pirates in their season opener, while Community Colleges of Spokane transfer Ryne Webb had two RBIs. Steve Hare got the loss for Whitworth, allowing all five first-inning runs on four hits and three walks.
