Cougars add Wisconsin, Minnesota

Wisconsin and Minnesota from the Big Ten Conference have been added to future Washington State University football schedules, according to WSU Director of Athletics Jim Sterk.

The Cougars and Wisconsin will meet three times over the next nine years, with the first meeting kicking off WSU’s 2007 schedule Sept. 1, at Madison. WSU will host the Badgers to start the 2013 season and the following year plays at Wisconsin.

Minnesota has been added to WSU’s schedule in 2010 and 2011, a home-and-home series that begins Sept. 18, at Minneapolis. The following season, 2011, WSU will host Minnesota in the season opener Sept. 3.

Washington State also announced a three-game set with Hawaii and a home-and-home with Nevada-Las Vegas.

College baseball

Ryley Hunter hit a game-wining single to score Caleb Reaber in the top of the 11th inning, and Whitworth defeated La Verne (Calif.) 4-3 at the Arizona Desert Classic in Glendale.

Danny Pecka hit a two-run home run to tie the game in the eighth for the Pirates (1-1).

“Jim Murphy hit the second of his two home runs in the top of the 10th, and Washington State (4-1) edged Hawaii-Hilo 13-12 in Hilo, Hawaii. The Cougars led 12-2 entering the bottom of the eighth before the Vulcans put up four runs in the inning and six more in the ninth.

Travis Webb picked up the win for WSU.
