American slaves topic

In conjunction with Black History Month, the Rev. Moses Berry will speak next Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and Feb. 26 at 4 p.m. at Christ the Savior Orthodox Church, 12407 E. 16th Ave.

Berry, a direct descendant of American slaves, will speak about the history of the spirituality of African American slaves and will bring along artifacts from the African American Heritage Museum in Ash Grove, Mo.

The items, including quilts from the Underground Railroad, slave chains and tags, photographs and neck irons, will be displayed Feb. 26 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Theater preview

The cast of the Christian Youth Theater’s production of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” will read from and perform the play today at 11 a.m. at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 15310 E. Indiana Ave., and at 1 p.m. at Auntie’s Bookstore, 402 W. Main Ave.

The events are a preview to the play, which will be performed March 10-19 at the CYT Theater, 708 W. Nora Ave.

Book study

Immanuel Baptist Church, 5109 N. Adams St., is presenting a six-week study group of the book “The Purpose-Driven Life” by Rick Warren.

The first meeting will be today from 10 a.m. to noon.

Inner stillness class

Ancient Traditions Community Church, 1928 E. Rich Ave., is offering a class on the third Monday of every month that will discuss the origins, techniques and strategy of finding inner stillness.

The first meeting will be Monday at 6:30 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $5 per class.
