Hayden Lake’s Mathews collects masters track honor
George Mathews of Hayden Lake, who gobbled up medals in world and national competitions in 2005, was named co-field athlete of the year for his age group by USATF Masters Track & Field and its annual meeting last month in Jacksonville, Fla.
Mathews, 62, won gold medals in the hammer and weight throw at the World Masters Games, and the hammer and weight pentathlon in the National Masters Championships in a three-week period.
He followed that up by winning a gold medal in the weight throw with a pending world record of 65 feet, 1 1/4 inches, and a silver in the weight pentathlon at the World Masters Athletic Championships in Spain. He also had a fourth-place finish in the hammer.
The weight pentathlon consists of the hammer, shot put, discus, javelin and weight throw and takes about six hours to complete.
College scene
Eastern Washington senior linebacker Joey Cwick from Mead collected a couple of awards last week as postseason honors continue to come in for members of the Eagles football team.
Cwick, who has a 3.68 grade-point average in biology, became the sixth EWU player named to the Division I-AA Athletic Directors Association of America Academic All-Star team since the honor’s inception eight years ago.
He also was one of five Eagles named to I-AA All-Northwest Region teams by Football Gazette.
Cwick and wide receiver Raul Vijil were selected to the second team while much-honored quarterback Erik Meyer, wide receiver Eric Kimble and offensive guard Matt Alfred were first-team all-region selections.
Meyer also was named first team All-America by Football Gazette and Kimble made the second team.
“ Washington State senior midfielder-defender Carmen Anderson has been named to the 2005 West Region third team by Soccer Buzz Magazine.
Anderson, earlier named to the All-Pac-10 second team, led the Cougars with seven goals, including two game-winners, four assists and 16 points. She finished her career with 10 goals, four assists and 24 points.
