A 32-year-old man is being held on $50,000 bail after turning himself in to Post Falls police and confessing he had molested two girls, ages 7 and 8. He was charged Wednesday with six felony counts of lewd conduct with a minor.

Rex Douglas McGregor told police last week that days earlier he had left a suicide note on the computer belonging to the family of the older girl. In the note he confessed that he’d been molesting the girl, McGregor told police. He also said he had been staying with the family for about a year.

According to police reports, McGregor said he wrote the note, then cut his wrists and drove as fast as he could, hoping to flip his car and kill himself. When the suicide attempt failed, McGregor told police, he checked himself into Kootenai Medical Center. After his release, he turned himself in.

McGregor told police he had been molesting the 8-year-old about twice monthly for the past six to eight months and that he also had sexual contact with the 7-year-old girl around New Year’s, according to reports. He told police that he was drunk or high on marijuana when the acts occurred.

In written statements, McGregor said he began molesting the 8-year-old when he was babysitting her.

In another written statement, McGregor said he was high on drugs when the 7-year-old girl visited the home on New Year’s. He said he smoked so much marijuana that he couldn’t stay awake and fell asleep on the couch with the girl. McGregor wrote that he awoke to find that neither he nor the 7-year-old had any clothes on.

McGregor on Friday declined the opportunity to comment on the charges against him.
