Chiefs drop third straight on road
EVERETT – Zach Hamill and Torrie Wheat had a goal and two assists apiece, and Shaun Heshka added three assists as the U.S. Division-leading Everett Silvertips routed the last-place Spokane Chiefs 5-1 in Western Hockey League play Sunday night at the Everett Events Center.
The Silvertips (29-17-2-1; 61 points) found the net 3:44 into the first period, when Hamill set up Jason Fransco for the game’s only goal at full strength.
Everett then reeled off four power-play goals in its first five opportunities – the most Spokane has allowed this season – during which Spokane goaltender Kevin Armstrong was pulled in favor of Thomas Stehr. Shane Harper gave the Silvertips a 4-0 lead at 10:05 of the second period, prompting the switch.
Everett took advantage of Armstrong’s absence as Wheat gave the Silvertips a 5-0 lead at 12:48 on the first shot Stehr faced. Stehr stopped the next nine shots.
The Chiefs (18-26-4-2; 42 points) broke the shutout when Michael Grabner scored his fourth goal in as many games and 17th of the season from Matthew McCue and Justin Falk at 16:21 of the second.
Spokane lost for the third straight night on the road, falling four points behind Tri-City (20-22-3-3) for fourth place in the U.S. Division. They will host third-place Portland (21-23-3-2) Friday at the Arena, where the Winter Hawks have taken two of three from the Chiefs this season.
