Macartney finishes 2nd in World Cup super-G
Christoph Gruber of Austria enjoyed two victories, winning a men’s World Cup super-G Sunday in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, and locking up an Olympic berth.
Shrugging off a scary crash in Saturday’s downhill, Gruber smacked into several gates but held on for his fourth career win, 0.82 seconds ahead than American Scott Macartney.
The Austrian finished in 1 minute, 26.52 seconds on the rough Kandahar course. Norwegian veteran Kjetil-Andre Aamodt was third in 1:27.37. Hermann Maier, who won Saturday’s downhill, finished fourth.
Nicole Hosp is becoming a multi-medal threat for the Turin Olympics.
The Austrian skied a flawless second run to win a World Cup giant slalom Sunday. Her first victory of the season came at the perfect time – 12 days before the Winter Games begin.
It was the fourth win of the 22-year-old’s career and her first since she broke her ankle two years ago. Hosp also has top-four finishes in slalom, super giant slalom and combined this season.
Hosp was fourth after the opening run. Her two-run time was 2 minutes, 33.51 seconds. Genevieve Simard of Canada was second, .31 seconds behind.
Hannu Manninen of Finland clinched the overall World Cup title in Nordic combined at Seefeld, Austria, after winning Sunday’s competition.
Manninen won after the 15-kilometer cross country race in 37 minutes, 40.3 seconds, beating Todd Lodwick of the United States and Christoph Bieler of Austria.
Alexander Subkov guided a four-man Russian bobsled to victory in Altenberg, Germany, to win the World Cup season title ahead of Canada’s Pierre Lueders.
Subkov and teammates Sergei Golubev, Alexei Seliverstov and Alexei Vojevoda finished in 1 minute 48.04 seconds with runs of 53.91 seconds and 54.13. Matthias Hoepfner in Germany I was second with a total 1:48.19.
Matti Hautamaki won the ski jump at a World Cup event in Zakopane, Poland, capturing his second victory of the weekend.
Hautamaki jumped 133.0 and 132.0 meters to win his 19th World Cup with 277.5 points, three more than fellow Finn Janne Ahonen. Austrian Thomas Morgenstern was third with 268.9 points, narrowly preventing a Finland sweep.

Lions name 2 assistants
The Detroit Lions announced that Donnie Henderson is the team’s new defensive coordinator.
Henderson comes to the Lions after two seasons as the New York Jets’ defensive coordinator. He parted ways with the team after Eric Mangini was hired as head coach Jan. 17.
The Lions also said Phil Snow will be the new linebackers coach – he was a defensive assistant for the Lions last season.
The Green Bay Packers made Tom Clements their quarterbacks coach.
Clements spent the past two seasons as offensive coordinator for Buffalo, which fired him Jan. 6.

U.S. men blank Norway
Taylor Twellman scored three goals to lead the U.S. national team to a 5-0 rout of Norway in an international friendly match at Carson, Calif.
The Americans, tuning up for the World Cup in Germany, used mostly domestic-based players in the victory. Foreign-based U.S. players will join the squad later.
Scott Dixon and new teammate Dan Wheldon joined Ganassi NASCAR driver Casey Mears in co-driving a Lexus Riley to a hard-earned victory in the Rolex 24 at Daytona Beach, Fla., America’s most prestigious endurance race.
Takashi Koshimoto of Japan defeated Injin Chi of South Korea by split decision to capture the WBC featherweight title in Fukuoka, Japan.
