Oilers rally, defeat Coyotes in shootout
Chris Pronger scored the tying goal with 0.3 seconds left to force overtime, and the Edmonton Oilers completed their stunning comeback by beating the Phoenix Coyotes in a shootout Sunday night in Glendale, Ariz.
Marty Reasoner beat Phoenix’s Mike Ricci in a faceoff that began with 2.2 seconds remaining to get the puck to Pronger, and the big defenseman threaded a one-timer through traffic, beating Curtis Joseph.
Ales Hemsky and Radek Dvorak then scored on Joseph in the shootout that was extended to six rounds.
Coyotes captain Shane Doan scored on Mike Morrison to keep the Coyotes in the tiebreaker after Hemsky, the third Edmonton skater, put the puck in.
Raffi Torres and Ryan Smyth had Edmonton’s other goals, and Morrison stopped 12 shots.
Zbynek Michalek, Dave Scatchard and Boyd Devereaux scored for Phoenix. Dennis Seidenberg had two assists.
Flames 5, Blackhawks 3: At Chicago, Roman Hamrlik had a goal and two assists as Calgary rallied with four unanswered goals to beat the Blackhawks. The Flames trailed 3-1 in the first period, but got goals from Hamrlik, Steven Reinprecht, Dion Phaneuf and Chuck Kobasew to snap a two-game losing streak. Calgary’s Darren McCarty scored in the first.
Capitals 2, Lightning 1: At Washington, Dainius Zubrus scored with 2:20 left in regulation and the Capitals edged Tampa Bay. Jeff Halpern also scored for the Capitals, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Vincent Lacavalier had the lone goal for the Lightning, who had gone 5-0-1 in their previous six games.
