Flyers come back, stun Rangers

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

The Peter Forsberg-less Philadelphia Flyers were searching for a goal from anyone in any way.

Then, it happened.

A puck deflected off the stick of an opponent and found its way into the New York Rangers’ net, starting a riveting comeback that turned a sure-fire loss into a 3-2 overtime victory for the Flyers Monday night in New York.

Philadelphia (31-13-8) tied it on goals by Joni Pitkanen and Mike Richards in the final 9:42 of regulation to force overtime. That’s when the Flyers’ defenseman, playing for just third time in 27 games because of an abdominal injury, struck again.

Pitkanen skated into the left circle and ripped a shot over Henrik Lundqvist’s glove 1:28 into the overtime period to snap Philadelphia’s two-game losing streak and hand the Rangers their second loss in six games.

Maple Leafs 4, Panthers 2: At Sunrise, Fla., Darcy Tucker and Jeff O’Neill scored on two-man advantages in the third to help Toronto snap an eight-game losing streak by beating Florida.

Bruins 5, Senators 0: At Ottawa, Tim Thomas made 44 saves for his first NHL shutout and Brad Boyes had a goal and two assists as Boston beat Ottawa.

Stars 3, Sharks 2 (OT): At Dallas, Jason Arnott scored with 35 seconds left in overtime to send Dallas past San Jose for its fifth straight victory.

Blues 3, Flames 2 (SO): At St. Louis, rookie Lee Stempniak, called up from the minors Sunday, scored in the fifth round of a shootout to lift St. Louis past Calgary.

Red Wings 5, Wild 4: At St. Paul, Minn., defenseman Andreas Lilja scored his first goal in 71 games to help Detroit beat Minnesota and improve to 7-1-1 in its last nine road games.

Mighty Ducks 4, Kings 3 (OT): At Anaheim, Calif., Teemu Selanne scored twice to reach 1,000 career points, and Scott Niedermayer’s goal 1:48 into overtime sent Anaheim past Los Angeles.

Off the ice

The Hurricanes acquired veteran center Doug Weight from the Blues, bolstering the best team in the NHL.

The 35-year-old Weight led the Blues with 33 assists and 44 points.

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Ed Jovanovski will miss the Olympics because of a lower abdominal injury.
