The Spokane RiverHawks swept a West Coast Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader from the Bellingham Bells, 6-1 and 2-1, Friday night at Avista Stadium to maintain their grip on first place at 11-4.

Cory Powell (1-1) went the distance to get the victory in the first game and Tommy Tribbett (3-0) picked up the victory in relief in the nightcap with Josh Williamson earning his second save.

Spokane heads for Wenatchee to open a three-game series on Monday.

Golf

University of Washington’s Zach Bixler (3-under-par 285) won by three strokes over three other golfers, including Huskies golf teammate Alex Prugh of Spokane, at the Washington State Golf Association Men’s Amateur Championship at McCormick Woods Golf Course in Port Orchard.

Prugh was the 2005 champion.

Two other Spokane-area golfers finished well. Nick Grigsby was ninth at 296 while Craig Leslie was in a tie for 12th at 298.

•Ellie Brophy of Spokane finished third in the WSGA Women’s Amateur on Thursday, four strokes behind winner Kim Shin, who finished at 9-over 231 at Rainier Golf and Country Club in Seattle. Annie Brophy of Spokane placed eighth at 246.

Legion baseball

A longtime Spokane baseball tradition returns today with the four-day American Legion Fourth of July Tournament.

Twenty-eight teams from the Pacific Northwest and Canada will take part in two tournaments, one for AAA teams and the other for AA teams.

The AAA games will be played at A.K. Jackson Field at Shadle Park and Spokane Falls CC. The title game will be played on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Jackson Field.

The AA games will be played at Gonzaga Prep, Whitworth and North Central. That tourney also concludes Tuesday.
