Ullrich camp seeks response

BERLIN – Jan Ullrich’s lawyers have asked Spanish authorities whether the doping allegations against the former Tour de France champion will lead to charges.

The German rider, who was suspended by his T-Mobile team from this year’s Tour, said Monday his lawyers also asked the officials for written clarification of the allegations. Ullrich stressed that he hasn’t been charged with anything.

“In a country governed by law, not only myself but every individual is innocent until proven guilty,” Ullrich said in a statement posted on his Web site.

Ullrich, who won the Tour in 1997 and was runner-up five times to Lance Armstrong, was pulled hours before the start of this year’s race after his name allegedly turned up on a list of 56 cyclists named in a Spanish probe as having contact with a doctor charged with doping.

Immediately following the announcement of his suspension, Ullrich publicly denied the doping claims.
