“Peter Crouch, England, put home a header in the 83rd minute to defeat Trinidad and Tobago.

“Fredrik Ljungberg, Sweden, scored his team’s first goal of the tournament, in the 89th minute to beat Paraguay.

Goal of the day

Ecuador’s second goal in its win over Costa Rica in Hamburg was the goal of the day.

In the 54th minute, a throw-in from the right sideline went to Edson Mendez just inside the area with defenders Luis Marin and Michael Umana between him and the net. Mendez chipped the ball over Marin and it was chested down by Augustin Delgado behind the defenders. Delgado put a right-footed shot to the short side past the leap of goalkeeper Jose Porras.

Americans relocate

The U.S. team decided to spend two nights at Ramstein Air Base because of safety concerns with the designated FIFA hotels in the Kaiserslautern area.

The Americans traveled from their base hotel in Hamburg, flying on a charter direct to Ramstein, where about 50,000 U.S. military, civilians and their families are based.
