Louis-Dreyfus stars in ‘Christine’

Kevin Mcdonough United Feature Syndicate

Julia Louis-Dreyfus stars in “The New Adventures of Old Christine” (8:30 p.m., CBS) as Christine, the divorced mother of 8-year-old Ritchie (Trevor Gagnon).

Mother and son live with her seemingly unemployed and unattached brother, Matthew (Hamish Linklater), who serves as a pinch-hit baby sitter and recipient of Christine’s many confessions, no matter how inappropriate or wince-inducing.

She and her ex-husband, Richard (Clark Gregg), get along great – in Christine’s opinion, “better than most married couples.”

Apparently Christine and Richard didn’t share much in the intimacy department, so little has changed since their divorce. At least that’s what she tells herself.

Christine’s bubble bursts when she discovers that Richard has a new girlfriend, a much younger and perkier woman, also named Christine (Emily Rutherfurd).

Now considered the “old” Christine, Louis-Dreyfus’ character goes about reinventing herself, dating men and contemplating intimacy with all of the awkwardness that entails. This should be a natural for Dreyfus, who turned making a fool of herself into an art form during her days as Elaine on “Seinfeld.”

If “Christine” limited itself to Christine’s floundering attempts in the singles scene, it might work. But the domestic stuff all but torpedoes the effort.
