Sasquatch third at NWAACCs
Sandpoint High graduate Ben Mitchell led five Community Colleges of Spokane players in double figures with 16 points, and the Sasquatch defeated Bellevue 73-71 to finish third at the NWAACC men’s basketball tournament Sunday in Kennewick.
Humberto Perez added 14 points for the Sasquatch (28-4), Erik Bell had 13, and Jeremy Mangum and Jordan Hammond chipped in 10 apiece.
Mangum, who made second-team all-tournament, also added 10 assists to complete his CCS career with a school-record 528.
Baseball
Todd Phillips hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning, and Trevor Sheffels (Wilbur-Creston) closed down a ninth-inning rally as Whitworth knocked off George Fox (8-6, 3-3) 7-6 in a Northwest Conference game at Merkel Field.
Sheffels came in with the bases loaded and nobody out, then forced Ryan Fobert to ground into an RBI double play and gave up an RBI single to Bo Thunell before forcing Evan Hagen’s flyout to center field.
Phillips finished the day 2 for 3 with four RBIs for the Pirates (6-9, 3-3), while Danny Pecka (Mead) and Nick Froman each had two hits.
•Tyler Moore hit a home run and Matt Hibbitts added a triple as Mt. Hood defeated the Community Colleges of Spokane 5-2 at the CCS Invitational in Pullman. Shawn Gizynski and Bryan Yardley each had a pair of hits for the Sasquatch (1-7) in their opening game of the day.
In the nightcap, Justin Lucero had two hits and Pat Kelly added a double as Bellevue defeated CCS 3-2.
•Tim Lincecum and Nick Hagadone combined for Washington’s first no-hitter in 37 years as the Huskies (15-5) routed Santa Clara (10-10) 9-0 in a non-conference game in Seattle.
Softball
Beth Kenck hit a two-run single in the third inning and an RBI single in the sixth as Pacific Lutheran (9-3, 6-2) rallied to defeat Whitworth 6-3 in the first game of a Northwest Conference doubleheader in Tacoma.
In the nightcap, Kristin Hanson hit a two-run triple in the fourth inning to seal Whitworth’s 5-1 victory. Jennifer earned her second win of the season for the Pirates (5-5, 5-3).
