Gonzaga rallies past Lafayette

The Gonzaga Bulldogs scored two runs in the sixth inning and rallied to a 6-3 win over Lafayette (3-7) Thursday at the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic baseball tournament in Fresno, Calif.

Gonzaga (13-9) took its first lead in the top of the second, scoring two runs on Ryan Wiegand’s RBI double and an RBI single from Will Ayala.

Josh Bryant pitched three shutout innings of relief to pick up the win.

Gonzaga plays Washington State today at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs and the Cougars have split two meetings this season.

In the late game at the tourney, Brian Lapin had a bases-clearing double during a five-run eighth and Brandon Burke (3-2) allowed one run in eight innings as host Fresno State (17-8) rolled to a 6-1 win over Washington State.

Zach McAngus went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Cougars (17-5).

Basketball

Fourth-seeded Lewis-Clark State defeated fifth-seeded Brewton-Parker College 80-63 to become the first No. 4 seed to advance to the second round of the women’s NAIA Division I National Championships in Jackson, Tenn.

Aundrea Morrison led the Warriors (26-6) with 30 points and 10 rebounds. L-C State plays top-seeded Trevecca-Nazarene (Tenn.) today at 2:15 p.m.

•Girls players throughout the Pacific Northwest will gather in Spokane this weekend for the annual Spokane Stars Shootout. Thirty-three teams will compete when play begins today at the Warehouse near Gonzaga University. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for students. Children younger than nine are free.

Golf

Idaho finished ninth and Eastern Washington took 13th in the final day of the UNLV Spring Women’s Invitational Wednesday at the Black Mountain Golf Course in Henderson, Nev.

•Downriver Golf Course will open Saturday with two or three temporary greens.

Swimming

Whitworth’s Loren Killgore and David Dolphay did not advance past their preliminary heats on the first day of the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
