Hofstra joins postseason winners list

Loren Stokes scored 23 points as Hofstra earned its first postseason victory in 33 years at the Division I level and extended its home winning streak to 21 with a 73-62 win over Nebraska in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament on Thursday night at Hempstead, N.Y.

Stokes shot 11 of 20 from the field, and Antoine Agudio scored 21 points on 9-for-16 shooting for Hofstra (25-6), which lost its previous two NIT appearances in 1999 and 2005. Adrian Uter, who made all six of his shots, had 13 points as the Pride shot 47.8 percent (31 for 65) for the game.

Hofstra, whose home winning streak is second to Gonzaga’s 40, will play at Saint Joseph’s (19-13) in the second round Monday.

Jason Dourisseau scored 15 points to lead Nebraska (19-14), which was playing in its 14th NIT and won in 1996. Jamel White had 14 points, while Aleks Maric added nine and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Saint Joseph’s 71, Rutgers 62: At Philadelphia, Abdulai Jalloh scored 18 of his 23 points in the first half to lead the Hawks (19-13) to a win over the Scarlet Knights (19-14).

Michigan 82, Texas-El Paso 67: At Ann Arbor, Mich., Chris Hunter scored a season-high 20 points and Dion Harris added 18 to lead the Wolverines (19-10) to their sixth straight postseason win, a victory over the Miners (21-10).

Michigan, the 2004 NIT champion, broke a three-game losing streak and will host Notre Dame in a second-round game Monday.

Creighton 71, Akron 60: At Omaha, Neb., Anthony Tolliver scored 18 points and Nick Porter had 15 to help the Bluejays (20-9) beat the Zips (23-10).

Creighton will host Miami in a second-round game Monday.
