WSU football forecast
Bright Spot
Defense shines
In Saturday’s brief scrimmage, the defense performed admirably, in stark contrast to both last spring and last season. The starting unit and the backups as well managed to keep the WSU offensive units from doing any significant damage. No touchdowns were scored even though most possession began on a relatively short field.
Still a little hazy
Injury bug bites
WSU got a two-fisted blow as it learned defensive tackle Fevaea’i Ahmu and center Kenny Alfred will miss significant time to injury. Ahmu has a broken foot and will miss at least 4-6 weeks – possibly up to three months if surgery is required. The Cougars have three healthy scholarship players at defensive tackle right now. Alfred, in a positional battle on the offensive line, broke his hand in Friday’s practice and will have surgery. He could return in a limited capacity by the end of spring practices, but won’t have use of his left hand on the field until fall camp.
