Sonnett, three other Pirates honored

Whitworth senior Jo Sonnett was named Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Year and earned her third all-NWC first-team honors Tuesday.

Sonnett finished the season 19-6 with a 1.78 ERA. She is Whitworth’s career leader in wins (59), strikeouts (557), complete games (61) and shutouts (18).

Pirates infielder Heather Case joined Sonnett on the first team after batting .416 and setting school records for runs (33) and hits (52), and tying the marks for doubles (13) and home runs (six). Case was also named NWC Player of the Week for hitting .500 with two game-winning home runs in a four-game weekend series against Linfield.

Whitworth’s Lindsay Davis, who batted a career-high .278, was named to the second team, and Kristin Hanson, who led the Pirates with 26 RBIs, was an honorable mention.

Liz Struhlmiller of Edwall, Wash., was a first-team pick from Pacific Lutheran.

Struhlmiller is a Christian Heritage grad.

Women’s golf

Community Colleges of Spokane won the Columbia Basin Invitational with a 518 at Canyon Lake Golf Course in Kennewick. The Sasquatch’s Sadie Green was the medalist with a two-day total of 169 at the par-72 course.

Track and field

The Community Colleges of Spokane women tied Lane with 16 points on the final day of the NWAACC heptathlon and decathlon championships.

Lane’s Heather Frigaard won the heptathlon with 4,085 points. Amber Nash of CCS was second with 4,081.

Team scores will carry over to the NWAACC championships May 22-23. CCS men did not compete in the decathlon.

Women’s basketball

Alison Chase, who spent the past two seasons as an assistant at North Idaho College, signed on as an assistant coach at the University of Idaho.

Women’s tennis

Gonzaga sophomore Emily Anderson, the team’s No. 1 singles player, was given West Coast Conference honorable mention honors.
