Broncheau sets UI school record at Vandal Jamboree

Jenn Broncheau set a University of Idaho school record in the hammer throw on the first day of the Vandal Jamboree in Moscow Friday.

Broncheau broke her record in the event, throwing 181 feet, 11 inches for an NCAA regional-qualifying mark and second-place finish. Freshman teammate Jake Boling won the men’s hammer with a regional-qualifying mark of 185-2.

Baseball

Zach Woodward hit a two-run single with the bases loaded to cap a five-run seventh inning and lead Gonzaga to a 6-1 victory over Pepperdine (31-17, 10-6) to open a three-game West Coast Conference series at Avista Stadium.

Second baseman Scott Campbell was 4 for 4 with a double and an RBI for the Bulldogs (27-19, 8-8), and left-hander Patrick Donovan (North Central High) allowed one run in seven innings for his seventh win of the season.

•Washington junior Tim Lincecum struck out 16 in eight innings and set the Pac-10 career mark to lead the 22nd-ranked Huskies (31-17, 9-7) to a 6-4 victory over fifth-ranked Oregon State (32-11, 9-4) in Corvallis, Ore.

Lincecum, who leads the nation this season with 11 victories and 168 strikeouts, has 460 career strikeouts to surpass the mark of 449, set by USC’s Rik Currier from 1998-2001.

Golf

Ferris High graduate and Washington junior Alex Prugh was named to the All-Pac-10 first team, while Washington State senior Ryan Witz earned honorable mention accolades.

Arizona State senior Alejandro Canizares and Stanford sophomore Rob Grube were co-players of the year, and UCLA’s O.D. Vincent was named coach of the year.

Volleyball

Former Gonzaga University assistant Jerry Wagner has accepted an offer to become the head coach at Montana.

Wagner, who spent one year at GU, has also been an assistant at Montana and Montana State. He was MSU’s associate head coach from 2003-04.

•Eastern Washington University signed two more recruits to national letters of intent to play next season.

Middle blocker Hayley Hills, of Quensal, British Columbia, and outside hitter Courtney Goodson (Arvada, Colo.) are the fourth and fifth to sign with EWU for this fall.
