Pickler enters final day in 2nd

Washington State junior Julie Pickler, the defending conference champion, was second Saturday after four events in the women’s heptathlon in the Pac-10 Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.

Pickler scored 3,415 points, three short of her lifetime best.

Arizona State’s Jacquelyn Johnson was in first place with 3,615 points.

•Idaho won nine events at the Vandal Jamboree in Moscow.

Russ Winger led UI, winning the discus with a personal best of 191 feet, 6 inches. He also won the shot put with a toss of 61-2 1/4, both regional qualifying marks.

Four WSU athletes reached PRs, including McKenzie Burgess Garberg in the women’s hammer (182-8), the No. 3 mark in school history, and Robert Williams, who won the men’s 110 hurdles (14.28 seconds).

Eastern Washington freshman Steve Bacon won the long jump with a regional qualifying mark of 24-1 3/4.

• Idaho’s Dee Olson was second in the 1,500 meters at the Oregon Twilight meet in Monmouth, Ore., with a season-best time of 4:18.58. Lewis and Clark graduate Britney Henry of Oregon won the hammer at 215-1.

•Josh Grewe (Northwest Christian) placed third in the men’s 400 hurdles in 55.71 at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships in Monmouth, Ore. Grewe runs for Northwest Nazarene University.

Baseball

Barry Enright earned his 10th win of the season, going seven innings and allowing two runs on six hits as No. 27 Pepperdine (32-17, 11-6) led 10-0 after five innings and beat Gonzaga (27-20, 8-9) 13-4 in West Coast Conference action at Avista Stadium.

•Chris Benson singled in Nick Connor in the top of the ninth as Utah Valley State (16-32) beat Washington State (29-17) 6-5 in a non-conference game in Pullman.

•No. 5 Oregon State (33-12, 10-4 Pac-10) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh in a 5-3 win over No. 22 Washington (31-18, 9-8) in Corvallis, Ore.

•Chris Bozo (Ferris) was 2 for 4 with a two-run home run that drove in the winning runs as Community Colleges of Spokane (16-24, 11-12 NWAACC) won the opener of a doubleheader 3-2 over Treasure Valley (32-14, 14-10) in Ontario, Ore.

In the second game, CCS made two errors in the bottom of the ninth as Treasure Valley scored four times to steal a 10-9 win.

Softball

Jessie LaPlante (Lakeland High) threw a two-hitter and hit a three-run triple as CC Spokane opened a doubleheader with Yakima (14-21, 6-15 NWAACC) with a 3-2 win at Spokane Falls.

In the second game, Morgan Thomsen (West Valley) went 4 for 4 with a two-run homer as CCS (28-8, 28-4) completed the sweep with a 15-2 win.

Rowing

Russia’s men’s and women’s national teams each took first in varsity 8 races at the Windermere Cup in Seattle. Russia’s men finished the 2,000-meter course in 6:04.72.Russia’s women crossed the finish line in 6:50.06.

Washington State was second in the women’s novice 8 (7:16.56) to Washington(7:09.97). Gonzaga’s men’s varsity 4 took third, finishing behind Washington’s “A” and “B” teams. GU crossed in 6:56.38.
