OUTPICK
Black is hot color for fungi fiends
Last summer’s forest fire that charred 52,000 acres of the Umatilla National Forest near Pomeroy cost state and federal agencies $15 million in fire-fighting costs.
This spring, however, the so-called School Fire is transforming into a gold mine for mushroom pickers.
The popular morel mushrooms are known to burst from soil the year after it’s been blackened by fires. Forest Service officials have never had to deal with an onslaught of commercial mushroom pickers in the Blue Mountains.
But that’s expected to change this year, they said.
