“State 5A playoffs: Rob Roth fanned 12 batters while giving up four hits, and improved to 8-0 on the season as Lewiston rolled past Highland 7-2 Friday in a semifinal contest at Boise. Scott Chance collected four hits and scored two runs for the Tigers (23-3), and Tyler Carson hit a pinch-hit homer in the sixth. Chris Butler knocked a two-run double in the third and then sealed the win with a two-run blast in the top of the seventh. Lewiston plays Twin Falls in the championship game at 6 p.m. (PST).
“State 3A playoffs: St. Maries held a two-run lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but South Fremont tied the contest and then scored in the eighth for the 5-4 win in a loser-out contest at Ontario, Ore. Tucker Baker started on the mound and had three hits for the Lumberjacks (15-6), who also had a pair of hits from Dalton Baker and Adam Benda. … Britt Foote went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and one RBI, as Middleton won 6-2 over Bonners Ferry in a loser-out contest. Ben Turner picked up a pair of hits, including a double for the Badgers (14-8), who pulled to within one run in the bottom of the fourth, but could not manage the equalizer before Middleton scored three more in the fifth.
Tennis
“State 5A tournament: Matt Marceau and Sam Lyons of Coeur d’Alene and Byron Gray of Lake City all dropped their first matches, but rebounded with wins to stay alive in the boys consolation bracket at Boise. Lewiston’s Kim Fong and Coeur d’Alene’s Christine Grimsley will compete today in the girls consolation bracket.
State 4A tournament: Moscow’s Alex Miller bounced back after an opening-round loss with a three-set win in the boys consolation bracket to earn another day of competition at Caldwell. Maddie Snevily of Moscow also came back from a first-round loss with a win in the girls consolation bracket.
Softball
“State 4A playoffs: Samantha Engel’s three-run double in the top of the third broke a 1-all tie and proved to be the game-winner, as Post Falls was dealt a 4-3 loss by Wood River in a loser-out contest at Pocatello. Amy Musch and Blake Meredith hit doubles for the Trojans (19-7), who stranded 12 runners on base.
