Capitals down Senators in overtime
Alex Ovechkin scored twice to help Washington overcome an early three-goal deficit, and Chris Clark netted the winner in overtime, leading the Capitals to a 4-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Monday night in Washington.
Ovechkin scored a power-play goal with 24.4 seconds left in regulation to tie it. Ottawa defenseman Chris Phillips was whistled for tripping with 1:03 to play and the visitors clinging to a 3-2 lead.
Clark then scored 1:33 into the extra period off an assist from Alexander Semin, who also assisted on both of Ovechkin’s goals. The reigning Calder Trophy winner as the league’s top rookie redirected a shot by Semin 7:56 into the second period to cut Washington’s deficit to one goal.
Thrashers 5, Bruins 1: At Atlanta, Ilya Kovalchuk scored three power-play goals in similar fashion, Johan Hedberg won his third straight start and Atlanta defeated Boston.
Kovalchuk staked the Thrashers to an early 2-0 lead with his first goal, restored the two-goal lead with 13:40 remaining and turned the game into a rout with a final goal 31/2 minutes later that gave him his second hat trick and 11th goal of the season.
Ducks 3, Penguins 2 (OT): At Anaheim, Calif., Teemu Selanne scored a power-play goal 44 seconds into overtime after drawing a tripping penalty from Noah Welch, and Anaheim extended its fast start with a victory over Pittsburgh.
Canucks 2, Stars 1: At Vancouver, British Columbia, Taylor Pyatt scored a power-play goal with 44.7 seconds left in the third period, sending Vancouver to a win over Dallas.
Roberto Luongo made 18 saves and Kevin Bieksa scored as the Canucks snapped a three-game losing streak.
Lightning 5, Islanders 1: At Uniondale, N.Y., childhood friends Martin St. Louis and Eric Perrin teamed up for the tiebreaking power-play goal in the second period that sent Tampa Bay to a slump-busting victory over New York.
Maple Leafs 4, Flyers 1: At Toronto, Nik Antropov, Alexei Ponikarovsky and Tomas Kaberle scored in the third period to lead Toronto to a victory over sagging Philadelphia.
Andrew Raycroft had 40 saves and Bates Battaglia scored for Toronto.
