Vieselmeyer leads four contenders

Marriage counselor and ordained minister Ron Vieselmeyer appeared headed to win a six-year term on the North Idaho College Board of Trustees, beating out four others in the most contested board race in recent memory.

According to early returns, Vieselmeyer had 34 percent of the vote, compared with civil engineer Jim Coleman’s 24 percent. Educator Dennis Conners had 16 percent, real estate agent Bill Brooks 16 percent and European-American civil rights activist Stan Hess 9 percent.

Vieselmeyer, a former one-term state representative, was out of town for almost a month leading up to the election but said he’s spent the last week and a half talking to people about what he wants to do at NIC.

He said he was asked to run by a number of people concerned with NIC’s relationship with the business community. A group of business representatives penned a letter of no confidence in NIC president Michael Burke this summer, citing concerns with the lack of classes that taught skills needed to get unfilled jobs in North Idaho.

“I feel it’s very important that not only the business community but the entire community be involved at NIC,” Vieselmeyer said.
