Cole’s hat trick lifts Hurricanes

Erik Cole scored three goals and Cam Ward posted his first regular-season shutout, leading Carolina to a 5-0 victory over Washington on Thursday night at Raleigh, N.C.

Eric Staal and Trevor Letowski also scored, Scott Walker had two assists and Ward stopped 20 shots. The Conn Smythe Trophy winner after he led Carolina to the Stanley Cup title last season, Ward had two shutouts in the 2006 playoffs.

It was Cole’s fourth career hat trick and first since an 8-2 win over Montreal on Jan. 31, 2006.

Maple Leafs 6, Bruins 4: At Boston, Andrew Raycroft made 28 saves but left Toronto’s victory over the Bruins early because of a groin strain.

Islanders 3, Flyers 1: At Philadelphia, Alexei Yashin scored twice and Rick DiPietro stopped 32 shots to lift New York to a win over the NHL-worst Flyers.

Devils 2, Blackhawks 1 (SO): At East Rutherford, N.J., Zach Parise and Brian Gionta scored in the shootout to lead New Jersey to a victory over reeling Chicago.

Blue Jackets 4, Blues 2: At St. Louis, Rostislav Klesla scored twice to lead Columbus to a victory over the Blues.

Stars 1, Coyotes 0: At Glendale, Ariz., Marty Turco stopped 13 shots in his first shutout of the season and made Brenden Morrow’s power-play goal stand up, giving Dallas a victory over Phoenix.

Ducks 6, Canucks 0: At Vancouver, British Columbia, Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 20 saves for Anaheim, which beat the Canucks and remained unbeaten in regulation for an NHL-record 16th game.

Sharks 7, Kings 3: At Los Angeles, Patrick Marleau had three goals, Jonathan Cheechoo scored twice to end a seven-game drought, and San Jose routed the Kings.

Off the ice

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Rory Fitzpatrick will miss the next four to six weeks because of a hairline fracture in his left foot. … The Detroit Red Wings placed forward Jason Williams on injured reserve, a day after he suffered a first-degree concussion and a facial laceration in a game against the Edmonton Oilers.
