Huskies ride the Waves

Jon Brockman had 25 points and 12 rebounds in his first game as Washington’s new leader to send the No. 17 Huskies to a 99-91 victory over Pepperdine in the Basketball Travelers Classic on Sunday night.
Freshman Quincy Pondexter added 21 points and seven rebounds. Touted classmate Spencer Hawes thrilled the home crowd with 12 points, five rebounds, seven assists and four blocks off the bench in the lightning-like debut for a Washington team that has nine freshmen and sophomores on its 13-man roster.
Jason Walberg – son of first-year Pepperdine coach Vance Walberg – had 18 points off the bench for the Waves (0-1). Marvin Lea added 16.
Pepperdine is returning four starters from last season’s 7-20 team that finished eighth in the West Coast Conference. But the Waves are missing Michael Gerrity, who average 14 points a game, for at least the next two weeks because of a foot injury.
(4) Pittsburgh 86, W. Michigan 67: At West Point, N.Y., Aaron Gray had 10 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Panthers (1-0) to a victory over the Broncos (0-1) in the inaugural Maggie Dixon Classic.
Mike Cook, making his debut with the Panthers, was 7 for 11 from the field and had 17 points to lead five scorers in double figures.
(7) Ohio St. 81, Kent St. 59: At Columbus, Ohio, Ron Lewis led the way with 18 points and three teammates also hit double figures to lead the Buckeyes (3-0) to a victory over the Golden Flashes (2-1) in the BCA Classic championship game.
(9) Wisconsin 72, Mercer 48: At Madison, Wis., Kammron Taylor scored 22 points and Alando Tucker added 21 as the Badgers beat the Bears in the season opener for both teams.
Virginia 93, (10) Arizona 90: At Charlottesville, Va., Mamadi Diane scored 25 points and Sean Singletary had 24 to help the Cavaliers (1-0) come from behind to beat the Wildcats (0-1).
The Wildcats were led by Ivan Radenovic with 24 points and Marcus Williams and Jawann McClellan with 18 each.
(12) Duke 86, Columbia 43: At Durham, N.C., Greg Paulus had seven assists, while freshman Brian Zoubek scored 18 points to lead the Blue Devils (1-0) past the Lions (0-1) in the CBE Classic.
(20) Syracuse 83, UTEP 69: At Syracuse, N.Y., Eric Devendorf had 19 points and a career-high seven rebounds, Matt Gorman had 12 points for the second straight game, and the Orange (3-0) were the winners over the Miners (2-1).
Oregon 116, Portland St. 68: At Eugene, Ore., freshman Tajuan Porter scored 38 points and set a new school record with 10 3-pointers to lead the Ducks (3-0) to a win against the Vikings (1-2) in the Basketball Travelers Classic tournament.
Oregon St. 78, Cal Poly 65: At Corvallis, Ore., Marcel Jones scored 21 points and Sasa Cuic had 20, as the Beavers (2-1) pulled away for a win against the Mustangs (1-2) in the Oregon Rain Invitational.
