Marquette prevails

Dominic James scored 17 points and Jerel McNeal added 13 as No. 16 Marquette escaped with a 59-56 overtime victory over Idaho State in a first-round game of the CBE Classic on Monday night in Milwaukee.

The Golden Eagles (2-0) struggled with their shooting throughout the game, going 19 of 64 from the field and 16 of 31 from the free throw line.

Akbar Abdul-Ahad led the Bengals (0-1) with 17 points.

(12) Duke 72, Georgia Southern 48: At Durham, N.C., Josh McRoberts and DeMarcus Nelson each scored 16 points to lead the Blue Devils (2-0) past the Eagles (1-1).

Vermont 77, (14) Boston College 63: At Boston, Mike Trimboli had 17 points and eight assists before falling to the floor with leg cramps with 19 seconds left as the Catamounts (2-1) coasted past the Eagles (1-1).

(20) Creighton 78, Mississippi Valley State 42: At Omaha, Neb., Anthony Tolliver and Nick Porter scored 14 points apiece to lead the Bluejays (1-0) to a victory over the Delta Devils (0-2).

(23) Georgia Tech 100, Jackson State 70: At Atlanta, freshmen Thaddeus Young, Javaris Crittenton and Zach Peacock were among six players in double figures as Georgia Tech’s “Fab Three” led the Yellow Jackets (2-0) past the Tigers (0-2).

(25) Tennessee 78, Fordham 71: At Nashville, Tenn., Chris Lofton scored 30 points and the Volunteers (2-0) beat the Rams (1-1) in the opening round of the NIT Season Tip-off.

Women’s basketball

(24) BYU 55, (4) Stanford 52: At Stanford, Calif., Haley Hall banked in a go-ahead 3-pointer with 16.5 seconds left, lifting the Cougars (2-0) to an upset of the Cardinal (1-1) in the second round of the preseason Women’s NIT.

(8) Connecticut 84, Richmond 50: At Hartford, Conn., Mel Thomas scored 23 points and Charde Houston had 20 and nine rebounds as the Huskies (1-0) beat the Spiders (0-1).

(10) LSU 88, Howard 44: At Baton Rouge, La., Sylvia Fowles scored 18 points and had 14 rebounds as the Tigers (2-0) beat the Bison (0-2).

(13) Arizona State 96, Florida Atlantic 60: At Tempe, Ariz., Dymond Simon scored 19 points and Spokane’s Emily Westerburg added 18 and was named tournament MVP to help the Sun Devils (3-0) beat the Owls (0-3) in the Veterans Day Classic Tournament.

Nebraska 66, (18) New Mexico 59: At Tempe, Ariz., Kelsey Griffin had 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Cornhuskers (1-1) past the Lobos (1-1).

(25) Texas 69, Louisiana-Lafayette 59: At Austin, Texas, Tiffany Jackson scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Longhorns (2-0) to a win over the Ragin’ Cajuns (1-1).
