NASCAR NEXTEL CUP

Ford 400

Site: Homestead, Fla. Schedule: Friday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 3 p.m.); Sunday, race (NBC, 2 p.m.). Track: Homestead-Miami Speedway (oval, 1.5 miles, 18-20 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 400 miles, 267 laps. Last race: Jimmie Johnson moved one step closer to his first NASCAR championship, leaving Phoenix International Speedway with a firm hold of the points standings. Johnson settled for second place, racing winner Kevin Harvick just hard enough over a final three-lap sprint to the finish to maintain his track position and keep the Nextel Cup title within his reach. He heads into the season finale with a 63-point lead over Matt Kenseth, needing to finish 12th or better to clinch the title. Last year: Tony Stewart cruised to his second NASCAR championship in four years at the Ford 400. Needing only to run a clean race, he hovered just outside the top 10 and away from any potential danger. He ended up 15th, winning the title by 35 points over Greg Biffle, who won the race for the second straight year by besting teammate Mark Martin in a door-to-door finish. Stewart became the 14th driver in NASCAR history with more than one championship and joined four-time winner Jeff Gordon as the only active drivers with multiple titles. Fast facts: Johnson has finished first or second in five straight races, the first driver to have such a streak since Gordon in 1998. But Johnson has a career average finish of 15.6 at Homestead. An accident knocked him to 40th place in last year’s event. … None of the top five drivers in the standings has a victory at Homestead. … Kevin Harvick is trying to become the first driver to win both the Busch and Nextel Cup championships in the same season. … Martin will race Jack Roush’s No. 6 Ford for the final time this weekend. Next year, the four-time series runner-up — arguably the best driver never to have won a Cup championship — will race a part-time schedule for MB2 Motorsports.

NASCAR BUSCH

Ford 300

Site: Homestead, Fla. Schedule: Saturday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 3:30 p.m.), race (TNT, 7 p.m.). Track: Homestead-Miami Speedway (oval, 1.5 miles, 18-20 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 300 miles, 200 laps. Last race: Matt Kenseth used a terrific final restart to hold off Kevin Harvick at Phoenix International Raceway, spoiling Harvick’s bid to break Sam Ard’s record of Busch wins in a season. Ard won 10 races in 1983 and Harvick, a nine-time winner this season who already has wrapped up the title, had hoped to use wins in the final two events this year to break the mark. Last year: Martin Truex Jr. survived a series of setbacks to finish seventh in the Ford 300 and grab his second straight Busch title on a night when Ryan Newman raced to another victory. Fast facts: Juan Pablo Montoya, the former Formula One driver making a full-time switch to NASCAR, wound up 20th in his third Busch race last weekend. Sam Hornish Jr., the reigning IndyCar Series champion who is giving NASCAR a tryout, was 36th and failed to finish his debut. … … There have been 17 different winners this season, one shy of the record set in 1988 and 1989. … Joe Nemechek, the series leader with three wins at Homestead, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. will try to qualify for this weekend’s race.

NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCKS

Ford 200

Site: Homestead, Fla. Schedule: Friday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 5 p.m.), race (Speed Channel, 7:30 p.m.). Track: Homestead-Miami Speedway (oval, 1.5 miles, 18-20 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 201 miles, 134 laps. Last race: Johnny Benson spun on the first lap Friday night, then came from the back of the field to win at Phoenix International Raceway. His fifth victory of the season allowed Benson to keep points leader Todd Bodine in sight with one race to go before the championship is decided. Bodine, who finished fourth, has a 112-point lead over Benson heading into the season finale. Last year: Ted Musgrave finished 20th in the rain-postponed Ford 200 and edged Dennis Setzer for his first truck championship. The 49-year-old Musgrave became NASCAR’s oldest champion, claiming the title after finishing second in 2001 and third the last three years. Todd Bodine won his third consecutive race. Fast facts: Bodine needs to finish 28th or better to clinch the title. Only twice in series history has the leader entering the final race failed to win the title. … Musgrave has finished among the top five in the season standings in each of the last five years, the second-longest streak in series history. He is currently fourth, 58 points ahead of sixth-place Ron Hornaday Jr. … David Reutimann is making his final truck appearance this weekend. He is jumping to the Busch and Nextel Cup circuits next season.

CHAMP CAR WORLD SERIES

Last race: Sebastien Bourdais capped his third straight Champ Car season championship with a victory in the season finale. Bourdais edged Justin Wilson by 3.528 seconds, passing the British driver in the final lap of the Mexico City Grand Prix.

NHRA

Last event: Tony Schumacher completed the biggest comeback in NHRA history, winning his third straight Top Fuel season title with a world record final-round run in the season finale. Entering the final round in the Auto Club NHRA Finals needing to win the race with a performance quicker than 4.437 seconds, Schumacher delivered with a stunning 4.428 at 327.98 mph to edge Doug Kalitta by 14 points. In Funny Car, John Force won his 122nd race just two rounds after clinching his 14th title. Greg Anderson bettered new champ Jason Line by three-hundredths of a second in Pro Stock, while Craig Treble got his first Pro Stock Motorcycle win in more than two years on a day that featured Andrew Hines winning his third straight motorcycle championship.

FORMULA ONE

Last race: Fernando Alonso became a Formula One champion again on Oct. 22, a day when Michael Schumacher retired to end a great career. Alonso won his second straight title with a runner-up finish to Felipe Massa at the Brazilian Grand Prix. He entered the race needing to finish eighth or better for the crown. Schumacher, a seven-time champ, punctured a tire less than 10 laps into the race, dropped out of contention early and finished fourth.
