Ducks continue slide after shootout loss
Tuomo Ruutu scored the tying goal with 9 minutes, 21 seconds left in regulation Friday night and had the only goal in the shootout, leading the Chicago Blackhawks to a 4-3 victory over the Anaheim Ducks in Anaheim, Calif.
Patrick Sharp had a goal and an assist, Martin Lapointe also scored and Michael Holmqvist had two assists, helping the Blackhawks stop a five-game road losing streak.
Chicago’s Nikolai Khabibulin made 42 saves in his first start since Oct. 21. The four-time All-Star missed the previous nine games because of a broken index finger.
Scott Niedermayer had three assists for the Ducks, who got power-play goals from Teemu Selanne and Chris Kunitz.
Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who surrendered five goals on 11 shots in Wednesday’s 7-4 home loss to Philadelphia and was benched in the first period, got the night off for Anaheim.
Lightning 3, Islanders 2 (SO): At Tampa, Fla., Dmitry Afanasenkov scored the lone shootout goal in the seventh round and Johan Holmqvist stopped 29 shots in regulation, leading Tampa Bay past New York.
Stars 5, Thrashers 3: At Atlanta, Mike Ribeiro scored two goals in the opening period and former No. 1 pick Patrik Stefan enjoyed a successful return to Atlanta, leading Dallas to a win over the Thrashers.
Hurricanes 4, Capitals 1: At Washington, Rod Brind’Amour had two goals and two assists, and Erik Cole also had a hand in every score for Carolina in a victory over the Capitals.
Avalanche 3, Blue Jackets 0: At Columbus, Ohio., in his first start since Nov. 2, Peter Budaj made 25 saves for his third career shutout and Colorado beat the struggling Blue Jackets to snap a four-game losing streak.
Devils 3, Senators 2: At East Rutherford, N.J., Jamie Langenbrunner scored twice and set up another, and Zach Parise scored a goal and had two assists to lead New Jersey to a victory over Ottawa.
Flames 4, Red Wings 1: At Calgary, Alberta, Kristian Huselius had a goal and an assist, Miikka Kiprusoff narrowly missed another shutout and the Flames beat Detroit for their sixth straight victory.
Canucks 4, Blues 2: At Vancouver, British Columbia, Markus Naslund scored twice, Roberto Luongo made 19 saves and Ryan Kesler added an insurance goal with 1:01 left to lift the Canucks to a win over St. Louis.
Sabres 4, Penguins 2: At Buffalo, N.Y., Maxim Afinogenov had a goal and an assist in his return from a shoulder injury and the Sabres beat Pittsburgh, for their fifth win in six games.
“Buffalo center Derek Roy will miss up to two weeks because of a hand injury.
